Pinging Backlinks?

I have read that pinging backlinks is not really such a good thing and its better to use social signal, bookmarks etc.. to get them indexed.
How about if google already knows a backlink/blog post exist (since its already in there index) and you go ahead and ping that page, would there be any adverse effects?
