I think more meta tags are available. I know only two meta tags which are most important to SEO. these tags are meta keywords and meta description.

Meta description is really not all that important to SEO, but can help click thru rates. Meta keywords are 100% useless, and I would actually say it is foolish to use them. You are just giving away your keywords to anyone that wants to check.

I have read that the keywords meta tag carries little weight when it comes to SEO. How important is it?

This is true with Google but I tell my clients to focus on it since other smaller search engines do look at them.

Google doesn't seem to count the keywords meta tag however other less sophisticated search engines (this can be small unknown ones) might use them. I would still not stuff the keywords meta tag with too many keywords as that might trigger some alarm at Google as in "this site is somewhat suspicious because it's trying too hard".

Lately the only on page SEO I focus on at all is the actual META info

No longer do I care about keyword density H1 H2 H3 or anything like that

I put my main keyword in the Meta title

I place it twice in the meta description

and then I also place it in the meta keywords along with all other long tail or relevant keywords I plan ranking for

sovereignn, here's why I get upset quite a bit on this forum.
People mistaking things. If you mistake simple SEO things, what
does that say for the rest of your SEO?

The real title tag is not a meta tag.

Way back in 1997, the meta title was used, as was a whole bunch
of other metas, as there were only directories. That meta title
is not longer used by anyone.

The title tag, the one that names you page and shows in search
results and the top of browsers, is not a meta tag. And that
      is very important.

Meta keywords are useless. What does that say about the responses
who talk about how meta keywords is useful? Useless advice.

      Get a grip people.

Do you want to make money and be successful, or not?
(I should use that as a sig line)

      I dunno.

Along with title and description meta tags, I have also heard about geo meta tags which is equally important. Does anyone know more about it?

There are many meta tags, but the only two I use is meta descriptions and meta keywords for SEO purpose.

@vikap27: The geo meta tags is for geo targetting purpose which is important if you are doing local SEO.

Meta tags are important for search engines and user because it tells what your website is all about and it should be implemented correctly to avoid negative impact. Title tag considered to be the most important element among the rest of the metas.

Meta tags (meta description tags and meta keyword tags) are an important factor for a higher ranking in the search engine results pages. Check out Google Webmaster Tools Support and you will find which are exactly tha tags they use.

Why we guys are talking about things which are not in use.

I have tested this on my own and found the meta tags are not helping our sites any more.

    Hope all accept with this.
