Still Anchor-Text Penalty exist?

I am working on a website, I used to target about 5-10 keywords for a sub-page as well as I am using direct url, "click here" and long relevant sentences as 'anchor text'. But all these random anchor text did not show any improvements on my rank, but rank is stable. However, when I start to get more links using main target keyword as 'anchor text' - I noticed improvements.... I would say, many links to the sub-page are pointing via the same anchor text, So, I wonder, still "Over anchor text optimisation" exist? Or Google starts to ignore it.

One of my friend is using the same anchor text for more than a year..I think he might have built nearly 3000 back links with same anchor text, and he still follows the same old Back linking techniques. His site is ranking on page 1 for that particular keyword post panda and penguin. But competition for that keyword is little bit low compared with other keywords.Google only knows the reason..

Good share mate, I guess, as far as I have already used varied anchor text, Google did not see more of my links as 'over-anchor text optimisation'

You are doing with anchor text variation and should continue it. Don't use only keyword as anchor text for all links.

      Hi Theeban,

I am convinced that the "Over anchor text optimisation" notion is a complete myth. I see evidence that discredits that myth every day.

The only evidence that I have seen anyone use, to promulgate that myth, has been from a correlation. And sorry folks, correlations are not evidence of causation.

Maybe it was the actual web spam, and not the common anchor text usage. Maybe Google told the truth when they said Penguin targeted webspam. (I know some folks reading this may be convinced that Google never tells the truth, and perhaps that is exactly why the did tell the truth, just to throw you off. :p )

The Penguin Update went after webspam. Any common technique used by web spammers will have a similar correlation, yet none of that suggests a "cause" for ranking decline, only a correlation.

This myth appears to be based on a logical fallacy known as a third-cause fallacy. My guess is that it came from somewhere in SEOMOZ crowd which is famous for link bait articles crafted from logical fallacies and Cargo Cult Science. That stuff makes for an interesting read, and lots of arguing, but please take what they publish with a grain of salt (it is link bait by design). Use your wits to spot the numerous logical fallacies that permeate much of their content. Use what they publish as a hint, but test for yourself, they are often so wrong.

Actually, it depends on the quality of the backlink used of a particular anchor text. imsun said one of his friend uses the same anchor text for a long time and yet remains stable in rankings. So I think the ratio between the number of good quality backlinks is bigger than those that have low quality.

But yes, anchor text diversion can be a good idea to get good rankings.

I believe there are many case studies where people are still using just one anchor text. It works in some instances. We even have several sites where we've only used one anchor text, and they're doing just fine. I think in the longer run it'll probably be better to have them diversified though.
