Diversify your keywords or not?

Is it a good idea to diversify the keywords when doing keywords research for a niche/affiliate site, for example if I have a site named: "Elephant training programs"
Is it a bad idea only to use keywords such as: how to train your elephant, elephant training advice, effective training for elephants, etc.
The articles around those keywords will basically variations on the same thing.

Is it a good idea (in googles eyes) to also write articles around keywords such as: buy food for elephants, elephant sickness etc or does that wander too far for the
domain name, if I want those keywords too should I go with another domain the is more broader?

Sincerely
Karl

Actually that is a good idea to diversify your keywords because, just like google stated, you could end up doing over-optimization.

Diversify your keywords for sure, then you will make your site more of an authority site which will be quite favorable in Google's eyes. Plus you are gaining more visitors that are searching for these other keyword phrases.

You should diversify your keywords if you want to make your site an authority site which is more favoured by Google in term of SEO.

Writing articles on long tail keywords like buy food for elephants, elephant sickness etc related to your site also will give you more traffic.

Your website > Actual human visitor that enjoys reading/sharing your content > Google.

    NOT

Yes, diversify your keywords as much as you can around the topic of your site. Do not create articles with keywords/topics that are just variations of each other i.e. 'good elephant food' and 'best food for elephants'. If you do that, Google Panda will visit your site and slap you silly.

Ok, thanks all but do I need to change the domain name now?, currently "Elephant training programs" if I write articles that wanders too far from that topic, the ones I mentioned before.

Also, It´s been recomended that I should only focus on buying keywords, Is that a good/bad idea?

EMDs look spammy. I would not use EMD rather placing keywords within title. If there are many keywords that you cant use inside of a title you can use main keyword within target page title and other keywords within other page titles. Then link these pages with the target page. That would work best. Excessive use of keywords within your website would help you to get penalty for keyword stuffing. So stay with existing domain and use keyword within title.

Exact Match Domains. For an example your Keyword is Elephant Trainer and the domain is ElephantTrainer.com. If I were you I would not use keywords in my domain name. Rather use something that is relevant to your business but not exactly the keyword.

Yes Karl, it is highly recommended to use diversified keywords, specially when getting backlinks (Anchor text diversity is very important and plays vital role in SERP).

P.S : Make sure you go for better keywords, Use Google external Keyword tool to get some ideas about keywords.

This is so true after Penguin update. I notice the difference in rankings.

Hmm, I´m not sure what to believe now since the guide I´m following suggest It´s important that the domain is an exact match to one of your best keywords.

Also, by doing a quick google search I found a domain that was an exact match of the keyword ranking at nr 1 position! so I´m not sure I agree that your argument is valid.

I used to be important, but not any more.

It won't be the EMD that is the reason it is ranking #1, it will be the on-page SEO and backlinks.

        ^ This.

Its not the EMD that causes poor performance. Its everything thats "wrapped around it", so to speak.

        Karl, you're overthinking it.

Just build a high quality website, with great content. Think long term instead of chasing ever changing algorithms with nonsensicle strategies.

It is a good idea to diversify keywords I assume. In natural links, you will see a lot of related keywords as ancor texts and also some general terms like "see this", "look here" too.
