Hi all, Guessing this has been asked before but did a quick search and couldn't find anything. Anyhow One of my sites is IMO in need of a new design as my current one clearly isn't working. Now the issue I have is, how badly affected will my site be and for how long.

I plain on completely stripping the site and starting again. The site currently gets about 40 - 50 Uv's a day all coming from google where I rank around 9th on page 1 for a fairly average keyword. The way I look at it is, I will only be losing 40 - 50 Uv's until my site gets back up there but just wondered how long that could take. Any thoughts and suggestions would be great and thanks in advance.

It probably won't be affected as long as you keep your pages intact and properly indexed or not indexed.

Shouldn't be too much of a pain...

Redesign might and might not affect your rankings/search traffic/online visibility. Your site won't suffer much only in case you take some SEO-safety measures:

    1. Do 301 redirects for all pages.

    2. Make a list of your top priority pages: high ranking pages, linked to pages, most visited pages. Verify your redirects for these ones first and foremost. Build links for the analogues of these ones in the first turn.

    3. Don't overdo with flash and java script - this will increase page load time. Use SEO-friendly design techniques only.

Although the commonly reported practice is to lose search traffic after redesign, you might escape it if you do everything right. Your traffic and visitors sound like a perfect moment to take a decent risk in search of better engagement via improved design, usability and layout.

Apparently, the time to recover also varies - some figures and charts are given in this post at SEJ.
