Internal Linking Question

If I am linking to my main page from a lot of internal pages, should I expect a penalty for using the same anchor text to link to my main page?

Example: Main page/main keyword = "dog training"
If I have 100 pages with the anchor text "dog training", in the content, linking to the homepage, is that "unatural link building" to the Google gods? I'm tired of second-guessing everything I do.

    It depends - if dog training is your brand / or root domain then it will be fine. If dog training is not your brand or part of your root domain them overdoing it with internal anchor text will cause a problem as it clearly is an attempt to manipulate rankings for the keyword dog training.

      Do you think the same tactics have to be used for internal linking as we are supposed to do with external backlinks?

      Should we now be adding things like "click here", "check this out", "learn more" etc? Seems like a waste of an anchor text, but that's how I got in trouble in the first place with my backlinks.

    The answer is No.

    It doesn't matter If the anchor-text is part of the root domain or site brand like suggested above, I'm not sure why anyone would even suggest that.

    There's no penalty for sitewide links. Keep in mind, don't spam the link a bunch of times per individual internal page, one link per page is enough for SEO.

    Also, it's a good idea both pages are relevant to each other.

      Thanks. That's what I was doing and hoping to hear. My site is narrow, but not a MN site. Still, the homepage does focus primarily on a single keyword. April 24th has nearly paralyzed me and a few others, I'd imagine.

    You will not get any penalty, although its always worth noting to randomize everything so I would mix it up
