Perhaps a slightly dramatic title.

Obviously lots of people got slapped by Google penguin and this comes at a time when people are already realising the true power of socially driven traffic. Plus Pinterest is literally expoding.

So as more social sites emerge and act as traffic magnets, do you think the emphasis on Google rankings and SEO is soon to die?

No and it will never will. From the early years of seo, link spamming has been rampant but with the latest updates, seo today is more of being a strategist, being creative to gain popularity.

Well said. I whole heartedly agree. But then I also think this has always been the case. However, I do feel that sites like Pinterest and the general traffic magnetism of social sites is opening new doors for vast traffic streams, that in some respects is pulling certain niches away from concentrating so heavily on SEO.

Agree, but looking into the positive side, a combination of having a good social media and search engine optimization strategy will be much better. Also, the general traffic magnetism from these social sites which is now referred by many as social signals provides one way for search engines on distinguishing authority / popular content.

  • SEO will only die if google decides to make page one nothing but paid advertising. Which isn't to far fetched of an idea.

Google updates such as Penguin and Panda might have knocked a lot of pages around and upset your rankings but is Google SEO dead? Not at all.

There are still people on the first page of Google aren't there? They didn't all disappear to page 50 lol, so us on page one of Google are saying Yes, Google SEO is ALIVE

Social media works really well for MLM's, selling junk to newbie IM'ers, and a few select businesses as a traffic source. For most real businesses though, it is not bringing them traffic. It can be a good way to keep in touch with clients and customers, but nobody is searching for their new dentist on Pinterest. People are not going to Facebook to find the right person to fix their car.

Social media is not a viable alternative to search engine traffic for most companies.

    SEO is far from dead.

Lately I saw someone ranking for car insurance quotes with 250.000+ xrumer / blogcomment links, so even web spam isn't dead, have to admit this guy is a genius spammer and perhaps this is a poor example cause I can't imagine his rankings will stay, but it definitely shows that SEO is still alive and kicking (even with spam methods although it's only short-term imo).

His link profile only contained of blogcomments and forumpost spam but the PR break down looked pretty natural as in:

    1x pr5
    2x pr4
    4x pr3
    16x pr2
    256x pr1
65000x pr0 (those numbers I made up but it kind of corresponds with what I saw in scrapebox)

You could really see that this wasn't just some random spamming but that he really outlined it.

He didn't use any anchor txt btw, just the plain url.

Would be interesting to see if his rankings stick, he also seems to be pretty consistent with the amount of links he build, perhaps he even increases it every day, haven't checked it that specific.
