Short tail is the best. There are tons of short tail keywords that work for SEO.

It is easier to start from the long tail keywords. once you achieve high positions for long tail terms, you can move on to the short tail keywords. Targeting the shorts from a start is a wasting of time as for me.

It really depends on the keywords. I like 3 to 4 word phrases, like:

    cure social anxiety
    repair htc evo screen
    stop emotional eating

    Etc...

Long tail are usually more targeted traffic..ex. How to make money marketing online.
It would be easier to rank for a long tail keyword such as the example above than it would be to rank for marketing online or online marketing...

Short tail mean too general and also high competition.
i will go with long tail, and sometime i also get good position in short tail because of that.

I tend to go for a mix of both - very often long tail keywords will lead more success in short tail keywords.

got them both and work on the long tail ones at starting phase, after getting some position you might work on short tail keywords.just like swimming at the pool for practice and swiming in the ocean at last

I would say a mixture of both will help you get traffic...
Short-tail keywords normally bring in more traffic but are harder to rank for.
Long-tail keywords don't bring in as much traffic but are easier to rank for.
So a mixture of both is definitely going to be the best choice.

Guys, far be it from me to inhibit anyone from coming up with their own private vernacular, but there's no such thing, in this context, as a "short tail".

      Hi Brad,

I am afraid you are wrong.

Short tail keywords are rare, but just like long tail keywords they have relative low traffic volume. The only difference between a long tail and a short tail keyword is that long tail keywords are low volume keywords that are part of a segment that collectively outnumber the high volume keywords, while the short tail keyword is part a of a data set that includes relatively few low volume keywords. In both cases, long tail and short tail keywords are low volume keywords, they are both part of the tail end of the graph.

      @nmb,

What you may have meant to ask is "How do you attract SEO traffic to your website - long tail or short head keywords?"

The high volume keywords in the typical keywords set are referred to as the short head. The "head" is the part of the power graph that represents high volume keywords, the "tail" is what follows the high volume keywords in your power graph.

If there are relatively few "low volume" keywords in your niche then you could refer to that set of low volume keywords as part of a short tail. As Alexa pointed out, short tail keywords are a rare data outlier and generally do not apply to any sensible SEO strategy.

You will inevitably be doing both if you write relevant content, because whatever keyphrase that content is aimed at, it will contain lots of other long-tail keyphrases as well. Some successful IMers ignore keyphrase research entirely, and just write naturally, because LSI is more important than keyword optimization now anyway, although some idea of how keywords work is a good idea, and you can certainly make use of any keyphrases with a particularly high ratio of searches to sites on a Google search.

So it's not really an either/or situation, but inevitably a bit of both

    Chris

    • It's definitely easier to rank for long tail keywords. If you are just starting your website, it is better to focus on these types of keywords because they bring in more targeted traffic and have low competition.
