I hope you can understand what I am trying to explain....

I want to redirect the pages in my top menu bar to point to different post categories instead of an actual page on my wordpress site. The only way I can seem to do this is by using a permanent 301 redirect. Will this have any type of negative impact on my site when I try to rank my posts.

Thanks.

As far as I know, 301 redirect won't hurt your sites. But avoid using 302 redirects as it will really hurt your rankings.

My new redir 301 page disappeared completely from SERPs. I then discovered I kept the old page live. I quickly deleted the old page and still 2 days later not found at all.

Are you sure that your 301 redirection is programmed correctly? I'm just wondering because once a redirection is in place, the old page will no longer exist at all because any request to that URL will be redirected.

Also, by completely disappear do you mean the new page is not indexed or it is not ranking for the keywords that you prefer?

pepper81, for your case, having a 301 redirection from a page URL to categories will not hurt the rankings of your individual posts. If you want your category pages or archives to rank as well, make sure that they are indexable by checking the meta robots tag or robots.txt.

*some* people do 301's all the time to pass linkjuice around. Doesn't hurt them.

Don't worry dude. 301 redirects is a SEO friendly redirection that isn't have any negative impact on website. So, do the 301 redirects without taking any tense.

    Code:
    RewriteRule ^oldpage-1-word.htm$ http://www.example.com/new-page-2-words.html [R=301,L]
I used an online tool and it said the page redirect works fine. I tested it manually too. It is not in the SERPs anymore for the same keyword as oldpage. ALL I did was change the page name.
It is changed sitewide and in the sitemap.xml too. I guess rare things happen to me, like now, as an adult, I just got chicken pox a few days ago.

301 redirects doesnot do any harm in terms of SEO.But it is a way from wherein users can come down to your site from any page and land at your 301 redirect page.
