For high competition, you should consider building your own private high pr blog network and place main keywords as anchor texts. You could find this age domain with PR and most importantly, have good backlinks at godaddy auctions. I use domain peeker for this and free account majesticseo and seo spyglass to check there backlinks. 5-10 high pr domains should do as a start.
Do some guest posts, sometimes we get lucky to have the article first publish on homepage or category with pr1+. For anchor texts on guest post, it doesn't matter if you have more brand/domain/URL as anchor texts. I'm saying this because you might encounter relevant blogs that accepts guest post but have similar keywords with yours. It's good since you have to vary your anchor text. I still could not tell how much percentage of main keyword as anchor texts, but I am sensitive on it. But still I was able to rank for my main keywords.
Web 2.0 properties. You could target making 10 with 2 articles in each web 2.0 as a start. Publish unique articles with related keywords in low competition. Try to rank those keywords with high pr comments, bookmarks, other web2.0 w/spun articles pointing to it. I am doing it like this and sometimes I could get some traffic, 1-5 visitors/day from each web 2.0 as of the moment. A good thing about this when google PR updates, then the web 2.0s could gain PR1+.
I also have youtube videos, I pin pictures, I tweet,digg,stumble some of my best posts, I join forums on my niche [to get some visitors and know my niche more].
Hmmmm..... and be patient and don't get frustrated about SEO.
Ohhh almost forgot. Press Release - domain/brand name pointing to home page. 2-3 long keyword phrase(?) pointing to some of your important inner pages/posts.
