Google webmaster tools are the best to analyse the site over all results with backlinks. And by entering query such as 'link:domain name' in google search box, so this will generate the results with such sites from which you have get backlinks.

Hahahaha people may disagree with me hear, but i would say none are the best backlink checkers. After building up around 500 do follow links in the past 2 months and around 200 in the past 2 weeks none of these backlink checkers work. I dont know whether its the new changes to Google, but i keep using them and none of them work unless you have an old website and well in that case most of the data is probably inacurate.

Totally agree with you here. None of these external data services work as well as advertised. Backlinkwatch is a useless service. I put my site in there and it reported that I had zero links! Really??!! I have over 10,000 links for this site, all live and approx 25% indexed! But backlinkwatch says I have zero!

Majestic SEO and ahrefs only provide a very small amount of links. I track my own links with my own desktop software, so I know exactly which Links that I made are still live. I also get data on the metrics such as indexed status, follow status, page rank, ip addresses as well as a hierarchy of multi tier links. I can see every single link across all of my tiers for every single one of my websites.

When I compare my stats to these external data services, it makes me think how useless they all really are. They don't report past tier 1 linking and do not provide 100% reporting on every single one of your tier 1 links. Plus they charge you a monthly fee as well! Absolute joke!

People!!! Why are you all voting for these external data services and paying them a monthly fee when they only give you a fraction of the total data for your sites! I have compared real live data to their data and confirm their data is useless and incomplete. This makes your business decisions when doing competitor analysis also incomplete.

How on earth can you run a successful business using incomplete data?

However, I'd avoid using Alexa or Google PR as backlink metrics. They're notoriously inaccurate. Stick with inlinking domains, anchor text distribution and in/outbound links and you get a great look at a linking page's quality.

I recommend using 2 of the three tools, as SEOMOZ, ahrefs and Majestic all have MOST of the features you want, but not ALL of them. The overlap between any 2 should work great.

If you looking for paid tools than it is better to use Open Site Explorer as Back link checker. You can also use Google Webmaster Tool, Backlinkwatch.com as free toll where you can get a good result.

It depends on your aim?

I find the information that I can gleam from Semrush does more than enough to convince the majority of potential customers that I know what I'm doing.

It is not great on backlinks yet, it's still in Beta, but strangely enough another post about backlinks is kicking around, and even though it is free and you've asked for paid, I find this tool is as good at giving a good cross section of a competitors backlinks.

I've tried many sites and software for checking BLs. But I always just end up manually checking it on google serp.

Just type in the url into google, for a more accurate serp, put quotation marks around the last word. for example ."com"

I do use two tools for this - the first is ahrefs, just for fast check of links. And when I need to make "better" research I use SEO Spy glass - both offer FREE versions that are pretty amazing!

Use the free version of SEO Spyglass. You can see what kind of PR sites are inbound links are arriving from, specify what kind of inbound links it is blogs, boards, etc, and also tell you if it's DoFollow or NoFollow.

ahrefs... seomoz... Man, I assume you guys are making some good coin with IM! seomoz is $99/month, ahrefs cheap pkg is $49/month, seospyglass, $100...

As to google webmaster, it's free, but unless I"m missing something you can only check your OWN backlinks, no one else's, right?

backlinkwatch is half way decent and free but man I hate those annoying popup screens. Anyone know a way to defeat them? (I know, beggars can't be choosers.)

Maybe this should go in another thread, but while we're speaking of seospyglass, has anyone used website auditor and does it (or any of these type on-site seo tools) work post-Penguin?

I checked out opensiteexplorer and it looks very good, and you can get some checks for free too.
I just downloaded SEO Spyglass so am looking forward to giving it a trial as well.

Anyone know if there are any Warrior discounts/offers for any of these recommended backlinks checkers? They are very pricey.
