Example: Let's say I'm an expert in bean counting.

I want to start a blog.

The domain: Howtobeancount.com is taken, so are it's little TLD brothers net, and org. Search volume for that phrase is around 15000 monthly, with low competition in Adwords and organic methods.

Now let's say the domain learnHowtoBeanCount.com is available, but the search volume with the word "learn" added on is nothing compared to the latter.

From an organic standpoint does the domain still have value? Or is the exact phrase all that matters when domain matching?

EMD's don't have much pull as they used to. It's more about the content you have on your site related to your keywords, rather than the domain. I would say LearnHowToBeanCount.com is just as good as HowToBeanCount.com because it still has the same phrase.

I would put a preference to HowToBeanCountUniversity.com instead of LearnHowToBeanCount.com. Either way long tail may serve you even better by allowing for extra traffic from long tail keywords which will be harder to rank on just howtobeancount.com.

    Hey, Justin.

I will agree that EMDs probably do not have as much ranking strength as they used to. To answer your question, yes the domain will still help to you to rank higher in organic search results, but no, a domain that is not the exact keyword that you wish to rank for is not going to receive nearly as much relevance as a keyword that does. ie: howtobeancount.com. I hope that helps.

You can also consider using hyphens. Example: how-to-count-beans.com

If the hyphens are not excessive and it looks good, it is still highly brandable (in case you wish to build a brand on it in the future).

He was just using that as an example. He doesn't really want howtocountbeans.com
