This page is ranking #1 on Page 1 of Google. How hard would it be for me to overtake them? Is this considered REALLY strong? It is for a pretty strong keyword.

I am not an expert but as far as I understand Number Of Backlink is not the main issue….i think -
    Quality of the Back Links
    Domain Age
    Page Rank
    Are more important…

but as you said #1 on Page 1 of Google and Pretty Strong Keyword – I guess it a good company with good quality back links and age…

Could you please pm with the domain name? Love to look at the detail of the site….

The info I gave was for the site's home page. The actual page that is #1 on Google is an article from a blog connected to main site. The actual page with the blog entry only has about 700 indexed backlinks.

    What do you guys think?

How many internal links are pointing at the ranked page?

What's the quality of the internal links, are the links relevant to the ranked page/keyword?

Only many hard long hours of time and work will tell. I think any rival can be beaten it just depends whether you have the time, money, energy and motivation to put into the website.

Looks like a lot of work to compete with them. I bet you can find something better to invest your time in.

That is not enough information to give you any idea about how hard it would be to outrank them. Number of backlinks doesn't mean a whole lot if they are all PR 0 and PR n/a backlinks.

Thats not enough information. You don't know how targeted those backlinks are. Take for instance the keyword "green cups filled with rodebts". The top ranking site is ehow. They have tons and tons of backlinks, but that doesn't necessarily mean the top search result is targeting that term. So it would be quite easy to outrank it if you wanted to.

I suggest you and anyone else who wants to get a better grasp on keyword research to sign up for a free trial with SEOmoz and use their Keyword Research tool. It gives you a ton of ranking factors so you can really see what is contributing to your competition's placement.
