Affiliate sites in trouble?

In my webmaster tool of one of my site (which is highly affiliated site), I got this message yesterday. Does anybody know what this could mean?

We've detected that some of your site's pages may be using techniques that are outside Google's Webmaster Guidelines.

Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes.

We encourage you to make changes to your site so that it meets our quality guidelines. Once you've made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google's search results.

If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request.

    It sounds like you bought unnatural links and Google doesn't like that.

      No, I never buy any links. Did do some manual link building though. My site is an affiliate site and according to this link Affiliate programs - Webmaster Tools Help, I need a forum/comment/blog section which I don't have. That could be the reason but I am not sure.

      But the website is several years old and this message just showed up now.

        You did promotional posting? Are all those posts relevant to the topic being discussed in that section of the forum?

          Yes, they all are relevant. I don't use any software or such.

    Yep, it doesn't sound good! Check where your links are pointing from using google webmaster tools and try to investigate these. Sites like fiverr are especially bad for spam links

    1. Do you submit articles to article submission directories?
    2. If your answer is affirmative, how many articles do you submit on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis?
    3. Do you submit these articles to directories that promote market niches relevant to your site's niche?
    4. What's the current PageRank(PR) of your site?

      No, I stopped doing article submissions long time ago when I realized that it didn't give me anything. My site currently has PR 3

    If you strongly believe that you are not violating any rules, you may submit an appeal for re-consideration to Google.

    It says, 'In general, sites that directly profit from traffic (e.g. search engine optimizers, affiliate programs, etc.) may need to provide more evidence of good faith before a site will be reconsidered.'

    Firstly, I'd use SEO SpyGlass to check exactly what backlinks you do have pointing to your site. It's this area that the Search Quality Team are expressing concerns about, rather than your content.

    If you can't find any dubious backlinks, then as contentwriting360 suggested, submit a reconsideration request.
