Never trust a toolbar. Always cross check it in Google by doing a search like this

info:mariaristorante.com (replace with domain you are searching for). you can also check Site:domain name afterwords. Some times a domain will show up there even if it looks deindexed (or just not indexed - big difference) plus sometimes its not the home page that has the highest PR

If the result EXACTLY matches the domain then its not being faked. If you have seoquake installed then you will be able to see the PR at the same time you do the search

I think you guys are still missing the point. Any tool can be fooled including SEOquake. the purpose of doing the search is to check if the domain name matches with the result that comes up with your own eyeballs. SEoquake just gives you an easy way to have the PR there when you do that test. It does not replaced the test. SO if seoquale shows PR 4 and the result from the search does not match its faked.

Yes it is of page rank 0. Sometimes it shows the PR of the previous page because of internet speed.

    • I agree with Sam daniel. It is the previous Page PR.

It is very easy to fake PR. You just do a redirect of a domain to one with a high PR until the next PR update. After the update rolls around, you turn of the redirect and it will look like it has the PR of the site you were redirecting it to until the next PR update comes. Then you quickly sell it to some fool who doesn't know any better.

That is the easiest way to fake it, but there are others too.

Mike mentioned one way to check for fake PR. In a lot of cases, you can just use common sense too. A site like CNN.com is a PR 8, so I highly doubt some little silly restaurant site is ever going to achieve a PR 9.

You can use SEOmoz's toolbar and check the domain authority. If it is pretty low, you probably do not need to bother investigating any further. It's fake.

Best way to be sure though is to look at the backlinks. If there are very few links and/or no links with high PR pointing at the site, it cannot have a high PR.

Mike thats 110% right but you know what? People have no business buying domains based on PR only . You always buy on the presence of the links and the kinds of links. Lots of domains are not faked that do not have the PR the toolbar shows. They have just lost the links. If you concentrate on checking the links and the kinds of links you won't get burned by fake PR, redirects or much of anything else.

It is PR 0 for sure. Because if a site have got an alexa rank of 4,123,155 cannot be PR 9. I use searchstatus add on in firefox and I think in most of the times it shows me the right information.

Despite what you may have heard PR is STILL a good quick indicator of links coming into a site. For example when you are buying an expiring domain you are essentially buying the links coming into that site. You still will want to check the links but you don't even have to bother if the PR is N/A zero or even one. You know right off the back the page has no good links going to it.

        Hi,
        Seen this late (browsing :-)).
If you wanna avoid any refresh issues with SEOQuake etc. just go to

        www(dot)prchecker(dot)info/check_page_rank(dot)php

        Works like a charm.

.... also here the little restaurant is a 0/10

        Cheers,

Actually Toolbars are not updated regularly that's the reason they show absurd results.
