I'm trying to help out a girl in our marketing department. She's looking to put together an SEO plan for our corporate site, but she needs help putting together the steps and making the plan more complete. It's just one aspect of the business plan, but it definitely needs to be improved.

She seems stressed so I wanted to help even though SEO isn't my specialty. I'll post it here and maybe you could help me out by adding additional steps rewording what she already has. I've removed specific company and competitor names to keep it somewhat confidential. I know what she wants to accomplish - increased rankings/traffic for main keywords related to our business, but she really needs help with the plan and terminology. I appreciate your input. Thanks.

Chad

Keyword research is crucial. You don't want to target a too competitive keyword because getting ranked for that keyword might be hard depending on what your competition is doing.

SEO depends a lot on two types of optimization. SEO on page optimization and SEO off page optimization. On page optimization means that your website is optimized for you keyword with the appropriate content along with other important factors like alt tags, meta tags, descriptions, so on and so forth.

Off page optimization is basically creating backlinks from different websites or directories that link your website to other websites. Their is several different ways to create backlinks which include web 2.0 links, forum links, blog links, social media links, article links and press releases.

You can use google webmaster tools to track your sites keywords and then tie it into google's analytics.

Traffic travis is a good keyword research tool which can be downloaded for free to aid you in your keyword research. You need to understand what a lot of the terminology means when it comes to comparing your keywords with your competitor.

If you want your SEO done right, you could probably hire someone on the warrior forum who could set up your SEO and help your company get the rankings it needs.

This is really bad advice for a real world business. You need to target keywords that make sense for your business regardless of competition. Yes, you can find some easy keywords to rank for. Those are great too. But ignoring keywords because they are "too competitive" is foolish.

That is an okay strategy in the IM world. In the real world, for real businesses, it makes little sense.

        Thanks Mike,

Can you or anyone else help me with what she should be covering in her plan outline? So if she has this:

        Steps:
        1. Capture list of key words used by competitors by viewing page source on key pages.
        2. Look up key words sourced in Google Ad Words to show competition for words.
        3. Search in Google.com for key words to see what is pulled.
        4. Source tool to show page rankings for corporate site and competitors.
        5. Track updates made to page and track rankings.

Does that look good/make sense or should there be other steps added? If so, what's missing?

        Steps:
        1. Create initial list of target keywords based on what competition is targeting and incorporating words that make sense for our business

        2. Analyze strength of top 10 competition for chosen keywords noting competitive parameters such as PR, incoming backlinks, title, description, and h1 tags.
        3. Search in Google.com for key words to see what is pulled.
        4. Source tool to show page rankings for corporate site and competitors.
        5. Track updates made to page and track rankings.
        6.
        7.
        8.
        9.
        10.

Mike OP clearly mentioned that he is not a SEO guy and the girl is actually not real SEO as well. How they would get success by targeting high competitive keywords? Im sure they even dont heard about PBNs and parallel, 3 way reciprocal links. So its not going to be prudent decision for them. At this stage they should target easiest keywords and try their best to rank the site using low quality backlinks. But I agree with you. We should target best traffic worthy keywords without think long time about competition.

If you're operating in a corporate environment, then your marketing manager should be contacting a professional seo firm.

My point is that REAL businesses should not be targeting just easy to rank for keywords. That is an absolutely stupid business plan. It makes their business look worthless when all their main competitors are ranking for the top traffic keywords and they cannot be found anywhere. That is kiddy **** for the IM world, but not how a real business operates.

Now if there are easy to rank for keywords that make sense for their business, yes, by all means go after those as well.

I think #1 should be getting the name of the URL as your main keyword. Then make sure that you "stay on topic". Then you could write press releases to send "real eye balls" to the page.

For all this tracking all you need is Google Analytics.

They don't seem to know why they want to want.

    The goal is completely ambiguous.

"Which" keywords do they want to compete against? How much traffic?

There are so many things they don't address...

Honestly, if the 'girl in marketing' is their resident expert, and can't figure this out, then it's painfully obvious they need to hire someone to help them with their SEO.

You know that this will be a big process for the young lady to get all the information she needs. So here is something to look at to help her and anyone else that needs SEO services.

Probably it is this thought that is making a lot of people invest in SEOPressor today. The following are some time-consuming things that SEOPressor can do for webmasters:-
    1. It finds out the hottest keywords on the Internet and tells you how you can use them. It keeps monitoring the keywords and continuously makes suggestions. It also tells you what density you should use the keyword in and what special formatting you need to keep it. All these things could be very time-consuming if done manually.
    2. The program also looks at the tags you have used and makes suggestions on how to improve prospects. It makes suggestions on which tagging formats should be used—H1, H2 or H3—and carries it out by itself.
    3. If you run a blog, SEOPressor will look at your individual posts and suggest changes if anything is wrong. It also tells you the value of each of your existing posts.
So, it is not just about optimizing your on-page needs but it is also about actually suggesting changes. The program is quite faithful to you; like an obedient animal it will do your bidding and improve the chances of your website on the Internet.

How long do you wait until you switch the Warrior Forum links in your OP over to links to your actual websites, neat trick, nobody else caught it

Had I not seen this post on the TP forum the other day, I wouldn't have thought much about it, but what really makes it stand out is all of the extra effort you went through to add links and such. Most people don't optimize their forum threads and add keyword optimized links to the warrior forum.

There's all of the basics of choosing keywords (google keyword tool, market samurai, etc.), optimizing on page for it, setting up google analytics, submitting your sitemap to webmaster tools, etc. but when it comes to off page be sure to get a professional.
A big part of seo now is improving your website so be sure to include content updates, probably via blog posts or news updates.

In the end it's probably easier just to buy her dinner
