The benefits of accepting blog comments?

So.....I decided to show comments/accept comments, and therefore I've gotten tons of notifications.

The usual (These are just examples) : "Hi great info!" - Jordan11 hxxp://Jordan 11 Concord|Jordan Concord 11

"I don't know what you're saying but check us out at hxxp://seopressor.org - blackhat

"I like what you did here, great theme." - raiseyourcredit hxxp://CREDITPROBLEMS.COM

Do any these comments, or will comments ever benefit me? Will it make potential customers/readers say "Oh wow, this site has actual comments that means that this site is popular?"

When really all I get are probably people trying to make a backlink .

I receive so many spam comments a day it gets annoying.

I delete them and mark them as spam unless you have something relevant to say do not say nothing at all!

It does not take long to make a legitimate comment, and if you can't take the few minutes it takes to comment intelligently on a post, you do not deserve a backlink from my blog.

Just delete them they can cause more harm than good.

Can I just edit their comment then and then approve it?

Well, if you're using WordPress, I suggest you turn on the Akismet plugin ... it will stop 99 % of all the spam comments before moderation already ... in most cases, people just try to get extra backlink with it, nothing else

All blog comments are spam. Period.
They do nothing for your page. It just
adds boatloads of dumb content to a page
that you should have worked very hard to
      create and maintain.

Comments do nothing to attract real people
to your blog. They only attract spammers, and
you probably will find your site on someone's
spam list to bombard. Like many threads here
      publish.

If you have adsense, you should not on any
circumstances put adsense on a page that
you allow comments, moderated or not.
Advertisers are paying to put an ad on your
content, not someone's content that is
not muddled by a bunch of junk.

Because so many people here spam blogs, and
say it's great, it skews the reality of allowing
      blog comments.

Seriously. There is no need. Consider your blog
a collection of articles. Articles do not
need comments. Add a poll or something. Or,
add 3rd party scripts that show up only
as flash or a line of code.

Best thing is to just not allow them. And,
best to not go around looking for blogs to
      spam yourself.

And if you think your comment is not spam,
      sorry. All comments are spam.

HAHAAHAHAH!!!! "And if you think your comment is not spam, sorry. All comments are spam." Best thing I've heard all day.

        For sure. Thanks man.

Off the ridiculous deep end again Paul. Waaaaaaay off the deep end. I can take you to some great blogs that have created a great community with comments (quite a few SEO related too like Seomoz) and yes it does attract users when they not only get great articles but to interact with people giving perspective. Huffington Post built a good part of their community around commentary from their users just like many sites have and they have all flourished for it.

However you have to really lock it down (or have the patience of Job). Lots of large sites are turning to third party sign ons like Facebook connect. once the spammers realize their is no hope of leaving any kind of link and the signup doesn't work with their senukeX blast they don't even bother.

So No you can of course say it but its simple not true that all comments are spam.

    LMAO, that comment is funny.

Turn the comments off, or do like I do & just delete the comment form from the theme/template.

If you really have to use comments, use something like the Facebook <iframe> code, then the comments will be on FB, not your site & won't clutter up your on-page SEO.

A good commenting system for your blog would be Disqus there is a lot more options to moderate the comments, you can also make the links no-follow. I have to say though in general most comments arent very meaningful.

No, the comments won't benefit you.

    1. Install Akismet and set this up to start marking these comments as spam if you haven't already
    2. Install a WP Captcha plugin as already mentioned to reduce the chances of spam (although a lot of this rubbish is entered in by humans, so don't be surprised if you still get some)
    3. Think about the content that the comments relate to - is it a thought provoking article that's going to provide debate, or just some basic information that doesn't need anyone else's input? If the former, you don't need comments. If the latter, you might want to enable comments.

The only time I've seen comment systems work is when you're trying to build a community and want to hear their voice. Most sites aren't out there for this purpose, so don't need comments.

I think, if the blog comments are good and not spam I think its helpful becuase OBL are helpful to your site too unless the comments is generic and nothing to do but to put their links along with the comment.

You can set WP comments to moderate any comments that have links in them. This is an easy way to separate real comments from spammers.

I get spammed with "payday loans" comment links all the time. Fortunately, Akismet kills them off.

There are no benefits of auto-approved comments other than this may give you something to talk about.

      • Blog comments represent user generated content. By accepting comments, you will get more content for your site or blog and increase your popularity. However, it is recommended to check comments before approving them in order to prevent spam.

Switch over to Facebook comments. At least those show up on timelines, increasing traffic.

Best thing about approving blog comments is that it makes your blog/site active. Of course you need to communicate with your visitors so they will come back to your site every time you update it with new content. Not allowing blog comments is the same thing as ignoring your visitors. You just need to have some plugin to eliminate spam. Akismet would be great.

Genuine comments are good food for web spiders.

Also, with a lot of good comments your site looks visited. Spam comments are those that are bad.

I LOVE blog commenting. I am pretty much assured that I will get my comments published nearly every time I leave a comment.

Blog comments done in the correct method, and relevant to the page content are actually adding value to a site.

The thing is I DO NOT SPAM blogs or even consider using black hat methods for doing so. That said I can go out and build blog comments within minutes as I have a pretty good system for doing this. Most of the sites I leave my comments have a homepage of PR2 to PR6.

I know the post/page may be PR0, but I still want my links on there for sure!

Good blog comments can be created within the time it took me to create this forum post, which in effect is similar to blog commenting when you think of it!
