How to find whether the directory is Spam or not?

I am currently working on directory submission for my website. How do I analyse the the directory is spam or not. How google treat the directory as spam directory? I would love to hear from your guys. Thanks in advance

    9 out of 10 if you have any doubts about a directory site, it's usually best to avoid it. While it wont hurt your site, it wont really do it any favours.

    Run a backlink analysis of your highest ranked competitors - see which directories they use and use the same. See which directories are used by the best SEO companies and go there - you will find that most of these will cost though!

    TBH unless the directory is built around your niche (and doesn't just include your niche as a category) or is BOTW/dmoz then I would put my efforts into other things that will help your site such as guest blogging or building your twitter/facebook following.

    just a question i have not come up with never before.. well the answer by blackrabbit is very smart and helpful.. just apply the common sense and upon any doubt.. just disregard that such directory!! hope this helps you a lot.. and keepin´ up!!
