What is the latest thinking on always using .com rather than any of the other extensions, especially .org? Is there still a consensus that .com draws better than the others?

I always go for a .com domain where possible, is just more established.

Depends what you are using it for I'd say.

I think dot org is widely used for charitable organizations. I generally go with dot com for my sites

If your talking about in terms of ranking them in Google, it makes no difference at all in my experience and have sites ranked with a range of extensions.

That is what I'm talking about, so thank you for that insight. I'm in a very highly competitive niche, and I'm trying to separate myself some with a .org extension (even though I own the .com, too).

Google has said very unambiguously, clearly and repeatedly that all top-level domain extensions are exactly the same for all ranking/SEO purposes.

If you're talking just about their ranking potential, the question really belongs here: Adsense / PPC / SEO Discussion Forum

With that being said, I suppose it boils down to the question what will your site be used for. IE: if its a charitable website then go with a .org, if its a blog then go with a .com.

I would go for a .com since the average user is so accustomed to it.

I always prefer going with .com as it is mostly known and popular extension.

  • I would grab .com whenever posible but I think for SEO it will not matter to much

The .com if better if you want somebody to type it into their brower. However from a search point of view I don't think it will make a difference to many users since they are just going to click on it.

dot com is the most popular! If you get the name of a home page you just automatically assume it's dot com... I will highly recommend this! I'm an affiliate marketer and I always search for dot com domains at first instance.. If they're occupied I choose dot org or dot net. I think they all three pass the same link juice

But as I explain... Always choose dot com over dot org or dot net

    .com - commercial
    .org - organization

but both can use for any of corse

but i think that .com better of course because it's main zone

Also consider using the extension as part of your branding depending on your niche

For example with the .me extension, willyouhelp.me, quickpay.me etc etc

.com domains are very good if you want to make a brand

In terms of SEO both are good, but if the .com is free I would buy the .com.

    First of all,

In terms of rankings, there is no difference between the two. NONE.

So its just personal preference and what suits your type of site the most. I feel .org always gives a sense of authority!

Yep, I have ranked both with no problems. There are usually a lot other reasons that people can't rank a site than the extension used.

I don't see a connection to be honest. Google ranks in order of relevance. Domain extension has no bearing on that in my opinion.

Pick any mumbo jumbo keyword (doesn't have to make sense) and build a site using any extension. I guarantee Google will rank it because it has no competition and scores highly for relevance.

    Just common sense...
