MATT CUTTS Interview - How to Get Free Traffic From Google

I always like to keep up with what Matt Cutts (the head guru at Google) says. He gave an interview recently (with Jefferson Graham of USA Today, print edition only) outlining some tips for getting to the top of Googles search results. Some were fairly obvious, but he is the one holding the all the keys to the door therefore one must pay attention to what hes says.

Point #1
Spotlight your search term prominently on the page. While this seems obvious. With all of googles updates, one could view Spotlighting your main keyword as "keyword Stuffing".

Say your keyword is "Best Blue Widget". Then Matt Cutts says the viewer should see that keyword in plain sight when they visit the page.
Point #2
Make sure you use TAGS to properly highlight the Title of the webpage. He goes on to say that only the First and Second TAGS are really payed attention to by Google.

This is a critical point. We have often been taught to place as many keyword Tags in as possible. While I would still put in more than 2 keyword Tags, MAKE SURE TO PUT THE 2 MOST IMPORTANT KEYWORD FIRST.
Point #3
Create a blog (on blogger or Wordpress) to make backlinks to your site. He states that you should add content regularly and engage the reader.

There is really nothing new here, but he does mention Blogger first. Take that as you wish.
Point #4
Register and use googles free tools. google.com/webmaster allows you to upload a text xml sitemap. Create it at www.xml-sitemaps.com . Matt states that once that is done, you can check to see how often google crawls your site.

Once again this is not earth shattering news, but important nonetheless.
Conclusion
Matt Cutts said a few interesting tidbits. Most interesting to me are the facts about the prominence of the first 2 keyword TAGS and also the Main Keyword display.

I would enjoy your feedback to what Matt Cutts had to say.

Have a Great Day!!

I don't even do SEO, never have..but if I did, I'd do the exact frikking opposite of what he says.

That's the best SEO advice I have read all week

I made some changes to the font. I hope that helped. Intestingly enough, I formatted the first draft so it could be easy to read. Life is funny sometimes.

What do you mean by "use tags" to highlight the title of the page? Do you mean Keywords meta tag? I believe it's highly unlikely that Matt Cutts would advise such thing

Create a blog (on blogger or Wordpress) to make backlinks to your site. He states that you should add content regularly and engage the reader.

Only if the backlinks are created by other people who happen to like your posts and not creating a blog just to post some backlinks to your own site. Of course you can still do this, but Matt Cutts would never say such a thing.

Register and use googles free tools. google.com/webmaster allows you to upload a text xml sitemap. Create it at Create your Google Sitemap Online - XML Sitemaps Generator . Matt states that once that is done, you can check to see how often google crawls your site.
Actually I have some sites in Google Webmaster Tools that don't have a sitemap and I still can see the crawl frequency.

I agree with previous posts. Matt Cuts has never given good 'tips', I literally think he just tries to make people fail at SEO.

My advice is don't learn from him.

That's one big post, and not sure what it's for.

I'd like to see the interview. Why? Because there
is no way Matt Cutts is going to say anything about
using the meta keyword tag. And stuff it.

If that's not what you mean, then what do you mean?

Let's recap what I'm talking about:

"Make sure you use TAGS to properly highlight the Title of the webpage. He goes on to say that only the First and Second TAGS are really payed attention to by Google.

This is a critical point. We have often been taught to place as many keyword Tags in as possible. While I would still put in more than 2 keyword Tags, MAKE SURE TO PUT THE 2 MOST IMPORTANT KEYWORD FIRST."

The title tag is important. But in the world is the first and second tags?
      makes no sense.

Putting as many keywords in the meta keyword is useless. Putting any
keywords using that tag is useless.

Makes me think the whole post is useless.

If Matt Cutts means heading tags, <h1> etc, that aint keyword tags
and means you have no clue.

Something got seriously lost in translation, or the post is one
      big spamzola.

You don't need to do any of that for free traffic from google.
      Misleading title as well.

      Paul

Tags have nothing to do with H1 and H2 tags. I am sorry for the confusion.

Matt Cutts was referring to the the keywords that you put in the Tag section after a post. You will find this section after your post in wordpress. I believe you only see the tag option if you are using the SEO optimize plugin (which you should be using).

The interview is with Jefferson Graham of USA Today. It was not published online.

I do agree with some of the sentiment of the thread, Matt Cutts will not tell you all of googles secrets. He just tries to give a hint here and there. Maybe I shouldn't have posted it. I was just trying to give a little back to the Warrior community.

IMO it's better to create new relevant post than to use duplicate pages of the original post which is what WP-Tags is doing.

The thing is, Matt has a history of saying a bunch of nothing, he would make a good politician.

I believe Matt tries to be genuinely helpful. Of course he isn't going to reveal all details about the Google search algorithm. There are several reasons to this.
    • No need to encourage spammers.
    • He probably doesn't know everything there is to know about the algorithm and has to be vague to avoid giving wrongful advice.
    • We're talking about trade secrets here. No matter how you put it the search engine is the core of Google.

Matt is worth listening to because he is the guy closest to the inner workings of the search engine giving advice. That makes his advice more valuable than anything any of us can come up with.

Trial and error can take us a long way, but we will never be able to fully understand the Google search engine. Let's face it - most of the time we are simply guessing. Experience is a great teacher and can help us figure out what seems to work and what doesn't.

Is it a pain in the behind when Google changes the rules? Sure is, but there is little we can do about it. Just don't go telling everybody SEO is dead or something like that!

I believe if you take the time to learn the craft of SEO from the bottom, if you apply some elbow grease it will be a skill you can always make use of.

If Google release an update that make your skills seem obsolete, think again. Have a read of what Google really wants. I believe most of those who got hit hard got hit because they did things that, when you think about it, were never in the interest of Google searchers.

If that happens to you reevaluate the situation and adapt.

It's a good idea to keep an ear to what Google says, so this is good to read.
That said, I think Matt Putz is an ahole who often lies about stuff.
One of his recent statements was that they are very happy with the results of the Penguin update . I am calling that a lie. There is just no way they could be happy with it. Have they SEEN the search results??!

hmmm first 2 tags getting attention from google bots?? Really? Matt is trying to trap me? Now if I use first two tags as first one is my main keyword and second one is LSI well may be its one kind of footprint that he is looking to trap me?
