Actually, if you're building an authority site, and it's brand new... then just stick with the default theme.

At this point, you don't have a lot of traffic, so there' no one to impress besides the search engines... I mean, spend your time on actual search terms that your visitors will use, even if it means buying some keyword research software. That is a better use of money than buying a theme at this point.
