It has always been the promise of Google to provide transparency in their tools and services through providing information available for everyone. One of their transparency disclosures are those removal requests from the copyright owners or even the government.

So what are they going to do with those valid copyright removal requests? As being reported by Mr. Amit Sighal the SVP, Engineering Department of Google, that they aim to provide a much greater experience for their users as a result, they updated their algorithm and have developed over 200 signals to generate the best possible result. “Starting next week, we will begin taking account new signal rankings: the number of valid copyright removal notices we receive for any given site” Singhal reported.

Those sites that had a high number of copyright removal requests will not be removed instead it will be demoted. The way I understood this ranking change, this will provide users to find more quality sources of content more easily since those legitimate sites will be ranked higher. However, for those demoted sites, this will give them an idea of improving their site and will avoid infringement.

This is how Singhal further describes the changes they made for doing this algorithm update.
“Since we re-booted our copyright removals over two years ago, we’ve been given much more data by copyright owners about infringing content online. In fact, we’re now receiving and processing more copyright removal notices every day than we did in all of 2009—more than 4.3 million URLs in the last 30 days alone. We will now be using this data as a signal in our search rankings.”

However, Google does not have any tool that would lead them to a conclusion that a particular website violates the copyright law. It is only the copyright holders knows who are those authorized and only the Courts can decide if an infringement of the copyright is taking place. This is actually the reason why Google is not removing any sites yet since this new signal had been influencing their ranking search results unless if they will be receiving a valid copyright removal notice. And the good news is they are not up to removing sites, so they will continue on providing “counter-notice” tools. This will give those websites that has been wrongly accused and removed a chance to be reinstated.

This is to show everyone that Google is not a foe but a friend for every webmaster and developers. They had been feeding a lot of updated tools and information for the benefit of everyone. From the webmasters to the users, they will not stop on improving and helping everyone to make Google legitimate and a quality resource for everyone.

Yeah this definitely marks a new move on Google's part, but I don't think it will affect SEO at all for the rest of us.

It all depends on how you look at it or it is effecting you, I for one will see some improvement from this due to the fact there are a couple of sites ranked higher then me in the SERP that are based on sharing copywrite material of the same exact keyword name.

I would be 1st if it wasn't for these links in some of my keywords, now I have the chance to be it perhaps

      However..

I do think if this effects you or not depends solely on what direction and keywords you have taken your sites, granted this may not effect those who involved in health and fitness but I have a site that deals with Role Playing Games which gets slightly undermined by this exact problem.

Well, the best thing to do is, wright unique or original content to avoid this update. Why copy from other resources if you can wright good content.. If you want to gain trust from your visitors or clients, provide them with a very informative original content..
