What would do if you had lots of time but little money to invest in SEO? What would be your key strategies for investing your own time into SEO?

I understand that a monetary investment is very helpful when it comes to SEO and I do have money to invest. However, I will be in the position in the near future where I have much more time and am wondering what people believe the best strategies are for "do it yourself" SEO

The best strategy in the beginning is to just get going. Don't worry about investing. Go to Google keyword tool, research some easy niches. Invest $9 in a domain name and a few bucks in hosting. Install Wordpress and write some content. Get the site looking nice, get some quality content and then start promotion. In the beginning I recommend doing all link building manually or at least semi-manually so you can see how things work. Nothing gives you a better education on Google than doing link building manually and seeing why and what increase your rankings. As time goes in you can than start investing in tools and outsourcing as you realize what you need and what would be helpful.

I agree with dp40oz, with little budget... You should invest more on your time with building your site manually and personally, though this may be a problem if you are not that skilled with writing. Though it is generally not that expensive today to find a decent article writer, it definitely means you have to shell out for this service if it is not on your list of skills.. But everything else can be done with just a patience and dedication.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I guess I should be a little more specific. I'm assuming the site is already built. One thing I definitely plan to do with my time is write & write & write to build content. That's a no-brainer. And like you said javajunkie, not everyone is a writer. I can write though so that's something I will definitely need to spend my time on. So I guess the real question is, what would people do for link building if they were doing it on their own and manually?

For free backlinks, here's what I would do:

-Make Blogger blogs (or other Web 2.0's). Write articles on the blogs, and post links in the articles back to my main website.

    -Do manual social bookmarking

-Create simple videos, upload them to video sites with a link to my website in the video description

-Write short PDF's with a link to my website, and upload the PDF to document sharing sites.

There's other methods, but I hope that helps.

The harder I work, the luckier I get.

If I was doing everything myself by hand and time no object, I would do:

Guest post writing, blog commenting, Web 2.0 site creation, video creation and uploading, lots of work on social media such as facebook and twitter, social bookmarking, forum posting.

Nice, that's a good list. I haven't heard of the PDF sharing sites. Is that very effective?
