I wouldn't use open source shopping cart software if you plan to take credit cards on your website. With PCI compliance regulations, you will be leaving yourself wide open to penalties if you take credit cards on-site. The only way for you to be compliant is to only accept off-site payments from PayPal or Google Wallet and that's going to lower your conversion rate. I would recommend using a PCI compliant cart like BigCommerce.

Regarding ongoing SEO work: I would recommend having a blog that you post unique content to at least twice each week. Create social profiles at Twitter, Facebook & Google+ where you can post an update each time you make a new post. Also, focus on spending a couple hours each week promoting your website in ways that will result in solid 1-way backlinks. You can do this by guest writing and reaching out to website owners that are in your market and linking to the top ranking websites.

With ecommerce sites, it really comes down to offpage SEO. No point in killing yourself with on-page. We build links the same way with ecommerce sites as we do with niche websites and see similar results.

Make sure your site is providing useful content and is visitor friendly. Then do the offsite SEO. If those steps are done good once you'll get the site up in Google the SEO part will maintain itself as you will get organic backlinks.

Apart from the common SEO tactics, use the below ones for your E-commerce website:

    1. Prepare Search engine friendly URLs (ex: /categories/widgets/ instead of ?productid=6 or ?catid=12)

    2. Add Product Feeds: Most of the sales come from Google shopping.

    3. Make sure your CMS works fine - it should help you match the URL, Title Tag, alt tags, H1 and content with the product targeted on that particular page.

    4. Proper Social Media integration.

    5. Less page load speed. Try to use only a few js libraries)

    6. Another most important thing is Canonical Url Implementation. Ideally your CMS should do it automatically.

I don't agree with that at all. On-page factors are just as important for ecommerce websites as they are for any type of website. To rank in Google you need authority and the best way to build authority is through a combo of solid incoming links and good on-page factors. (not to mention it's harder to get solid websites to link to you without good quality content)
