I was wondering if people could comment on my latest SEO strategy. I know everyone was wants a .com url but I am not going pay $2500 to someone who is sitting on it. Here is the situation: I already have a dot.com business online. However. I can't get high enough a particular search term to get hits. At this point I am about #45 on Google when I need to be on page 1. I know that the URL is important for SEO. What I am considering is to buy the term with a .biz, hopefully get to page 1 and then drive traffic to my .com What do you think?

Why not just rank the .com for the term you want to rank for?

Setup a link campaign and you'll start to see results within 3-4 weeks

Exact domain helps a little, but I think you'd be better off continuing to optimize your .com. You could be in a competitive niche that just takes time, the .biz could take just as long and be a waste of time.

IF you still decide to do it, be sure to by the .biz with a different host and registrar. Although I do not recommend wasting time at it since the .biz will be brand new and not really pass on a lot of link juice anyway, the last thing you want is to have google catch on that you are building your own links and penalize you (which they do). Being on the same domain and host is an easy track to see that you are trying to build unnatural links for yourself.

I usually tell clients SEO is like 4 tires on a car. All need to be inflated well to get to the destination fastest (which is the top of page 1). If you have one or more flat tires, you might still get to your destination but it will take a lot longer.

The 4 inflated tires need to be:
    1. good onsite optimization (title tags, h tags, good content, good inlink practices)
    2. good backlinks coming in, as natural as possible and from sites related to your site
    3. trusted by google (domain age, traffic, low bounce rate, long visit duration)
    4. social presence (facebook traffic, twitter traffic, and even youtube traffic, seem to help more and more lately) this is where my tire is the most underinflated. The jury is still out on this, but I've seen proof that people good with social media skills start outranking the competition. It could be that this helps build good backlinks which is a very strong factor in the seo algorithm.

If one of your tires are low, try pumping it up. For instance #3 can be improved for Bounce rate and visitor retention by putting videos on your site and telling visitors to visit other pages.

You are putting far too much emphasis on a keyword rich domain name.

Also, if you are going to rank the .biz, why try to funnel traffic to the .com then? The more jumps that people have to make, the worse the conversion is going to be.

      Seems legit.

EMD is not the main factor, its everything else. Having an EMD does not have the weight it once carried

If you are serious about your brand and your business, go for the .com.

I appreciate the feedback but I respectfully disagree with those you who say that domain name is not an important factor for SEO. It might be industry specific but I know that when I Google all of the key works in my domain, My sites are page 1 and usually in top 3 or 4 spots. When I Google some of the Keywords, my site drops to towards the end of page 1 or even on page 2. The top sites in my industry correspond to the keywords in the URL. Of course, there are other factors in play. I just created a 1 page site with a URL containing a popular search term and 1 day being after published, without Google knowing about any links at all, the sites rank #14
