Trying to understanding backlinking

I have a question concerning backlinking and how it relates to the keyword, so my question is do all backlinks help a page with regard to all the keywords it contains or only certain backlinks help a page's SERP with regard to a specific keyword.

Example:
Lets say you have a page about boxes, on this page you delve into a few sub topics such as red boxes, big boxes and red big boxes in addition to the primary topic of boxes.
So you start to build backlinks and diversify them of course, you have some as boxes, red boxes, red big boxes and big boxes.

Now, do all of the backlinks help each of the other keywords or do only red box backlinks help the red box keyword in the SERP? If I work on building links for red big boxes will it also help boxes and red boxes in the SERP?

I hope this makes sense..

    Let's me see how best I can answer your question;

    Red Boxes and Red Big Boxes would be variations Boxes. And Yes that page will still get some rankings from Anchor text from Red Boxes And Red Big Box but there won't be as effective as an Anchor text with Boxes....

    Also, unless you're starting to rank for Red Boxes and Red Big Boxes, they you really don't need to build a ton of links with these as Anchor text...

    And this thing about click here and link as anchor test is crap....

    You just need to build links with more words with your keyword at the fron and get credit for these links.

    So, you can build links like;
    Boxes - That Are Red
    Boxes - That Are Big
    Boxes - Red Boxes
    Boxes - Red Big Boxes
    Or
    Boxes - (Some text that explain what boxes are about or just some texts if your promoting something).

    And if you're needs some backlinks then check out this awesome post;

    I hope I have made things clear and all the best....

    Thanks, my question was more about figuring out how to manage a backlink strategy when dealing with pages that target multiple keywords. So I was simply wondering if I had backlinks targetting red boxes would it also help boxes and big red boxes SERP or would all backlinks for red boxes be only counted towards that SERP and nothing else.

    I did read that post, nice source of info there. thanks

    Yes, I do think you cleared up and the way I understood your answer is yes they would help but not be as effective as a backlink with the exact keyword or the keyword at the very front of the text.

    Well, if it is matching broad keyword "boxes" then it is still relevant to your site and you should get backlink from that site.

      So a backlink of boxes would provide equal juice to boxes, red boxes, big boxes and red big boxes?
