Importance of page titles?

I'm about to launch a major site upgrade. I've broken my very long sales page into about 6 smaller pages based on themes. In other words, I've created more of a content-based website.

In creating the new pages I wonder how important keyword-rich urls are. I've always based my article titles on keywords, i.e. "lose_weight_fast.html".

My home page has to be index.html but should I stuff my other main content urls with keywords? This seems to make sense but I've checked some of my top competition and they use only the usual things like "testimonials.html" and "faq.html", etc.

What's the deal here?

    Hi David,

    I believe there is much evidence that keywords in your URL is a significant factor in SEO. If your competitors are not taking advantage then this is good news for you.

    Your example "lose_weight_fast.html" shows you using underscores. This is not optimal for SEO. Use hyphens instead and you will get the full benefit of your keywords in your URL.

    By the way your post title is a bit misleading since your question is about file names and URLs and nothing about "page titles".

    Yes!

    I have recently rebuilt all of mine & my clients dynamic website, so that they read as if they are .html pages.
    I have also made sure that each page has a keywords rich URL.

    This technique has had a massive effect on both mine, and my clients website.

    As long as you keep the urls relevant to the on-page content and don't go overboard with the keywords in the url then go for it.
