Article submission - Use the top 10 article directories and all is fine
Blog commenting - Make sure you manually post at non approve relevant blogs
Spinning Article for Web 2.0 - Vary up your anchor and it shouldn't be a problem
Social Bookmarking - Forget about BMD, just use the top 10-15 sites
Forum Posting - Make sure you only post on relevant forums
Directory Submission - Pick the PR4+ ones and you should be fine

The problem with most of these links is not the link type it self but how people use it, instead of building them manually and putting some time into it they prefer to use tools like:

    - scrapebox
    - xrumer
    - article marketing robot
    - bookmark demon

And well, that's just a recipe to get penalized fast.

Blog commenting is still working great as long as you're not blindly blasting thousands of blogs with awful comments and hoping that they stick. Leaving legitimate (manual) comments on high quality blogs is the way to go.

Anyway, @ the OP, most SEO methods that worked 5 years ago are still working just fine with modifications. You just need to adapt. If you don't, you're not going to get anywhere.

    • You could also use press release distribution and guest posting. Classified ads work well too. The best way to find out which of these strategies work best for your site is to test them and track your results.

      where are you people living?

You keep looking under the same rocks, day after day, for
      what? A better looking worm?

      How about this:

Linkbait: Use social media to get yourself seen. Use your own
blogs, squidoo, hub, etc. to create a huge footprint on the web.
Twitter is an animal....facebook groups....you should be getting
links from other people...join forums in your niche... participate...
      make friends...

Start another website...shock! You want backlinks forever? Nothing
beats it... hosting and domains are so cheap....

Buy links on high PR, high traffic sites.

Publish more content on your present websites. Instant backlink.
Internal linking gives instant high PR, authoritative, contextual
      backlink.

FYI: there are no legitimate comments for backlinks. All comments
with backlinks are spam. Can't believe the same old tired crap
is just floating around. Turds are turds, whether they are sinkers
      or floaters...

      Doesn't anybody have a strategy?

Everything you just listed is great if you are building a site that you really love, most are building crappy little sites just to make a quick buck, so they will never put in all that work just to rank 4slicetoaster.com

          New niche!

Anyway, as a general suggestion to everyone here, if you go after lower competition phrases, keywords, whatever, you're not going to have to obsess about link building too much. I know I'd rather spend my time finding products to promote, creating the content, etc, while throwing in a little bit of backlinking to help rank my pages.

You can generally get pretty decent rankings in just a few weeks if you're going after the right keywords. And if they're BUYER keywords you may start to see results pretty quickly. Instead of running around in circles just trying to get on page 1 of Google.

I think this is one of the #1 problems for a lot of SEO's they tend to attack things without any real plan, few links here, order a service there, build a few more, no real consistency or plan of action.

It seems a lot of peoples link building is also 'reactive' as in the link strategy changes based on the rankings while I tend to follow a strategy and see it through to the end regardless of what the rankings are doing during the execution.

Personally I think it sets off a big red flag if Google dumps a page from 18 to not in the top 500 for a few weeks and all link building ceases.

Stay away from spinning. Blog commenting is still working from relevant sites with PR and low OBL.

After the Google Update. I try to many Link building strategy test.

      I not test all strategy, from my doing and work as below;

Social bookmarking (High authority site, High PR) = 6 site
Spinning Article for Web 2.0 (High authority site, High PR) = 2 site
All make a network and link to each sub-page of my site

I can suggest for 1st page of GG.

Everything you listed here works well if you do it correctly. I think, Bookmarking and Comments are not working well as before.

And, now more back link strategies came in field like hub pages, yellow pages, ads, Lens and many more.

You asked about Spinning articles too. Never use spun articles for any purpose whether that may be for web 2.0 or Article submission. Whatever you do, that should be natural and useful for at least one end user. Because, Google loves whatever users love.

Get links from high traffic sites or don't try to get them. no more use of them. If you want more links, just create one another website which is specially made for your site. This is great idea to me and I've executed it and working well.

Google updates has really improved all the link building strategies. It only rewards the website which receives natural links. If you don't get the desired results from the strategies that you have mentioned, then be a guest blogger, get more social and use press release to promote everything that is useful.
