How you do reverse Engineer of your competitors?

Most of us sometimes are very busy thinking what technique or strategy should we implement to push our site to first page of search result. We didn't realized that we don't need to think or re-invent new techniques because the techniques used by those sites in the top 10 of search engine result are proven to work isn't?

All we need to do is find our what they did to rank top 10. We just need to reverse engineer them. I know many of you doing this already hope to hear your strategies here to reverse engineer your competitors.

For me the easiest way on offpage SEO is to use Open Site Explore of SEOMoz very powerful tool to check your websites off page optimization information.

Additional to that is SEMrush, it will list source of back link of the site I am spying.

I will get all the list of site where my competitors get back link then I will see to it that I can get back link from those sites where they get back links.

How about you guys care to share?

      If you don't need to check more than 3 sites a day Open Site Explorer is fine... SEMrush is free.

          Unfortunately there are hundreds of other unknown factors involved besides backlinks. Age, internal linking, pagerank of home page and internal pages and several hundred other factors.

            I agree with you that is the reason I also use SEOquake where you it helps you to analyzed websites. Like number of index pages, ages, page info and other information you needed to know about your competitors website

    Personally I don't worry about how or why the sites who are higher rank then me got there, when building my site it is merely a constant building of perception to google that my site offers more and better content then them and has progressed naturally.

    Otherwise you are trying to compete against sites with so little data and information that you fighting blind.

    Yes SEOMoz has great tools I'm a pro member there. I also combine those results with Market Samurai's Competition Checker - I like this one the most.
