Seems like people here are confused about what an authority site is.

This article was published today. Please read it and stop using the label where it doesn't apply.

Thanks for the link, but I would be very surprised If the majority of people on this forum would go this route (link in OP) simply because most folks can't be bothered with anything more than spamming links. The proof is in all the irrelevant forum sig. links WF members spam with nonsense comments.

The chicken link in the SEW article (link in OP) is a good example of how to turn a hobby into a business, basically all they do is create a gathering place for anyone interested in chickens.

I have 3 sites that tap into an authority forums traffic (around 150k members). I posted quality content related to a sub-niche in that forum, enough free content they made me a forum Mod. (which has perks). I've been getting a steady flow of free traffic from that large forum for years, never missed a single day of traffic from that forum since my sites have been live.

Basically that large forum is a partner, I send them traffic, they send me traffic. Doesn't cost me a penny & the traffic is laser targeted to my sub-niche sites.

That sounds like a very good model. Do you use social media as well on your 3 sites?

Nope, roughly a 50/50 mix of forum & SERP traffic.

What I've found is, if you get serious about posting useful stuff on a niche forum that covers the entire niche, pick a sub-niche that has a lot of active forum members, then post useful content directly on the forum (don't even need links at first) it builds up trust. People are looking for something useful & they want to know they can trust the source.

I'm not talking about posting forum content that looks scripted, just for the sake of a link. I'm talking about building up the sites brand (long term).

My sites (sub-niche) was created because I was working off-line in/around 2000 for an employer & I just got very interested in my work as a hobby at home. It's easier to create a site/business If you actually enjoy the subject/niche.

Also, If you target the highest traffic forum in your niche, forum members will spread your links all over the net on same niche forums/blogs. I think a lot of forum members belong to multiple same niche forums.
