Can You Get Rid of Date Or Image meta in SERPS?

When I research my articles in SERPS, Google usually puts the date at the start of the meta description, but not always.

I tried not dating my posts, and then Google put the image meta description at the start in SERPS instead - I always have an image at the top of my articles.

Sometimes Google puts the date and the image meta tags at the start of my SERPS.

Question 1: do these dates and or image detail characters use up part of my meta description 'allowance' of 150 characters, or are they in addition to my ~150?

I think they must subtract from the 150, because most people only get about 130 - 135 characters of meta description displayed at most.

Question 2: If these extra characters are subtracting from my 'allowed number of characters' is there a way to stop Google putting them there and reducing the length of my visible meta description in SERPS?

I see some SERPS where no date, or image labeling info is shown at all, so all their 150 characters are being used for the actual meta description of the article.

I'd like to be able to do that, but how?

    1. Remove the date from the theme single.php file. You'll have to wait until Google visits the page again for the date to be removed from the SERP description.
    2. You have two meta description tags for your internal pages, which is probably causing confusion for Google bots & probably why the SERP description is showing multiple description text.

Example of multiple meta description tags on the same internal page:

    hxxp://addictionrehabnow.com/safe-levels-of-drinking-alcohol-australian-guidelines-2009/

Change hxxp to http in the link above.

All in One SEO Pack 1.6.13.8

<meta name="description" content="Know the Recommended Alcohol Safe Drinking Levels & Reduce Risk of lifetime harm: No more than 2 per day for men AND women & 4 per single occasion" />
    Weaver 2.2.8 subtheme

<meta name="description" content=" Addiction Rehab Now - Reliable Information about Addiction, Substance Abuse and Rehab " />

Hi Yukon, thanks for your reply.

    I'm confused!

The first meta description you quote is for the individual post, (entered in the SEO Pack field below the edit page of the post) - this is the one that appears in SERPs for that one article,

and the second meta description is for the whole url (entered in Dashboard<Settings<General<Tagline).

What's wrong with that? Isn't that what you are supposed to do?

Nope, you only want to have a single instance of the meta-description tag per page.

So I shouldn't have a meta description for my Domain?

OMG! I found a little check box in Advanced Options of my Weaver theme that should have been checked if I'm using an SEO plugin. Now I have only one meta description!

    Thanks Yukon.
