Keywords on the page vs. in meta tags

I was watching a video tutorial about setting up a WordPress site that uses the All-In-One SEO plugin, and the tutorial said to enter keywords in the plugin settings that aren't actually on any of my pages. That is, my site is (for example) Widgets Review. My main keyword would be "widgets review", and I have some LSI keywords for it as well, and I do use them on my pages. However, the video suggests entering things like "widgets scam", "widgets information" and so on, in the SEO plugin settings, but I don't use those exact phrases on my site.

Is is okay to include things like that? I remember years ago that would be a hindrance to getting ranked. What about now?

You can put on some keywords which aren't in your content , but you have to keep it related. So if you are optimizing your page for widgets review you have to put those keywords inside your meta tags. So shortly it's ok to slap in some related long tails etc , but it's a common sense to optimize it for your main keywords too.

The meta keywords tag is useless. Put whatever you want there because search engines do not use it. There is no benefit to the keyword meta tag.

I used the wrong phrase by saying meta tags.

Which tag are you talking about, the meta description? If so, the meta description is for human eyes (not SEO), considering the same page can be ranked in Google SERPs without the tag even being on the page.

When creating a post in WP, All-In-One SEO has a field for keywords for that post. It's all meta data to me, so whether it's a tag or description, for human eyes or not, I still have to fill it in, but don't want to risk the wrath of Google.

It's called optimization for something , and other search engines are still using them, so all in all it wont hurt you. About meta description I usually focus on something that will convert the user , so put a strong sentence to attract more clicks.

Keywords on Meta Title and Meta Description are important... Meta Tags are useless but the keywords on the page are important too...

Joel as I told you before nothing bad will happen, keep it related and you're good to go. You may missed something or missunderstood as I doubt there's a tutorial around telling such things.
