Am I doing something wrong on new sites?

How long does it typically take to rank for keywords that get about 200-1000 monthly google searches (All report high competition via adwords tool)?

Each of my category pages fits this criteria.

I have 1-2 500 word good articles on each of 5 different category pages.

Then I have about seven 250 word reviews within the categories.

The review keywords have less than 50 monthly google searches with low comp...They are ranking around 25-35 in google

My category keywords were ranking 25-50 during google dance, and have dropped out of top 100...

Would you say this is typical? I social bookmarked, all articles are syndicated on top 4-5 article directories, and made youtube videos for each article...My videos are outranking my site.

Im not sure if I was punished via Panda on Aug 20th which seems likely, or if this is just typical for a small new site.

It's not possible for anyone to say how long it will take.

Your competition is the top ten you find on page 1.

    What do they have for:

Links, article length, number of articles, PR, relevant links, outbound auth links and to whom? etc...

The chances of you having beaten them with what you did is very slim.

You must analyze your competition and that will tell you what you must do to outrank them. Anything anyone else tells you could not possibly be true.

    Hey Denutza!

The number of monthly Google searches won't help you to see how tough the competition is. Enfusia is right, you need to look at more data.

What is the PageRank of the top few pages that are competing for your main keyword?

I actually did alot of keyword research with Market Samurai before choosing keywords, just cant recall all the details..

A quick rundown of top 10 sites for one of my keywords showed PR of 2 for Overstock.com and another site had PR2...Amazon.com was up there with PR 0.

The above example I was top 10 before google dance ended...2 days ago I went back up to 25, but immediately am out of top 100 again.

Its been about a month since that keyword dropped out of top 100 for me...And the 25 ranking was just a one day thing.

My PR is 1 for that page.

Cool - yeah you should be able to rank for that term no problem. It can take some time - you just need to get some more links.

Do you have a method that you can use to keep getting links?

I did manual press releases, manual blog submissions mostly nofollow, facebook twitter links, some auto web 2.0 and misc submissions via sick submitter (probably less than 50 total links), a manual hubpage with PR2, a few other manual blogs I created and added youtube videos to these blogs, all my articles were accepted by top 4 article sites with links back to original article.

Other than that I had a lot of Amazon aff ads on my site above the fold, and just trying to figure out if Google penalized me for them or not...Ive since removed most of them.

Put ads in after you're ranking, just to be safe when it comes to affiliate. No point placing ads when you're getting no traffic eh?

Next, look at your competitors and see what they've written. See if there content is better than yours. Use ahrefs.com to check their backlinks to that page, and analyse the backlinks.

You might notice that one page has a PR4 page linking in, in which case, it'd be hard to rank. You need to go into specifics when looking at new competitors.

With that said, I just took on a new niche site with 1.7million results and sites like mashable.com on the top page.

In two weeks, I've took my niche site to bottom of page 2 for a 16k monthly search with $7 per click. All of my articles are 1000-4000 words and highly related to my niche.

Make content for your readers, not google!

It sounds like you're doing some decent backlink building. Are you "branding" your sites properly or are you just building the typical keyword targeted anchor text? You want to build links with natural anchor text. You may be stuck because of too much focus on highly targeted. Just my guess though.

I've had problems with this also. I had one site immediately rank @ #20 sit there forever. I decided to do some back linking (aside from my social bookmarking). I used a fiverr gig....big mistake. Site dropped off to over 500 and is nowhere ranking now. Still indexed just not ranking. My gig was for 50 high pr 4 and above profile back links. Bad move on my part.
