Nearly all my sites got wiped out thanks to Penguin. One of them was a 10 page niche adsense site which was one of best earners which disappeared to about page 15 of google. I've 301'd this domain and have got my rankings back (at the moment).

The original site was highly optimized with the EasyWPSEO plugin - kw density 5-6%, kw in H1, H2, H3, alt tags, underlined, bold, italics. The main kw of each page was also the menu label of each page.

The first thing I did was to de-optimize the site bringing the kw density down to 2%, removing some H1,H2,H3 tags and the underlined, bold, italics.

I also took the kw out of the menu label to make the list of pages in the sidebar look more natural. For example bluewidgets.com- changed the menu labels from where to where buy bluewidgets to where to buy it etc. It made the site look more natural because if you're on a bluewidget site you don't need to have bluewidget on all the menu labels.

Next I got a new domain name from Godaddy. I took this opportunity to go change the main page of the site and decided to make one of the inner pages of the site my main page (because it had more exact searches). I got a .com with the kw of that page in it and then cloned the site, changed the inner page that I was targeting to the main page, quickly edited the header image to reflect the new name of the site and then started doing the 301s.

I 301'd each URL to the new URLs on the new site using .htaccess.

I then built a good quality squidoo lense and hubpage pointing at the new site and then blasted them using Zenno (link wheels, bookmarks and guestbooks). Also did a small web 2.0 link wheel linking the lens and hub with the new site. That probably hasn't has any effect yet as I haven't pinged it or blasted it.

This was on the 26th and I started getting traffic back the next day and it's been growing since. Yesterday was 95% of the adsense earnings that I would expect from it on a Sunday. The interesting thing is that a lot of the inner pages are ranking higher than they were at the moment (one is 5th for a 49k exact search).

Shit is still bouncing and all of this may go to shit tomorrow. The last thing I wanted to do was start some dumbass thread about 'THIS IS HOW TO BEAT PENGUIN' because all the SERPS are up in the air and nothing is permanent at the moment.

All I'm saying is this is what I did and my site has been reborn (at the moment)!

Thanks buddy for the step by step advice. Many of my sites were also affected by Penguin. I chose to start fresh but interestingly one of my worst affected site is back to 35% of its original traffic with no intervention on my part. So Google is reconsidering its rash steps and is bringing some over-optimized sites if they are relevant to the search.

Is Zeno hard to learn? What sites does it promote pages?

Learning Zenno takes some time, but no other tool can offer you that much control over your automated link campaigns. Basically if there's something you can do by hand, it can be done with Zenno.

the 301 redirect did most of the heavy lifting for your new site.

Fortunately it passes the link juice without the penalty. For now at least.

    thanks for sharing

Ive tried the 301 approach already. It lasts around 2 weeks then the new domain is hit by the Penguin penalty passing over to it.

The Payday Loans industry have been exploiting this short term loophole doing 301 redirects. They wait til the new domain becomes penalised. Then they do another 301 redirect to a new domain for a couple weeks until that is infected and then redirect to another new domain and so on..

I had done it on many sites but it works for little time just a temporary ranking for few days and they are back to hell again after some days. Hope your sticks. Will wait for some days and will ask again about your rankings.

    Re: 301's

I've had two sites get affected. One I tried to fix by fixing all of the issues on the website and mostly succeeded, but then nothing changed with the penalty, so we switched to a new domain and 301'd the old site. Rankings returned and stayed.

Second site, didn't change anything and just 301'd the old site. The rankings returned for a few weeks, then right back to no where.

Not saying that means anything, but I am now making sure any affected sites are fixed BEFORE putting in a 301.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Two of my sites were hit by Penguin. One site recovered sufficiently just by adding some links but other site is in still in the tank and only 15% of its original traffic. No amount of links has given it the wings to fly out of its trouble.

thank you for sharing your experience.

I just wanted to add that there is also a randomness factor do the penalties associated with Google Penguin. As a case in point, some of our private testing domains were hit by Penguin. I did nothing to remove the penalty and over time the websites are back in ranking again.

How many pages to these websites have? 3 :-)

    I hope this helps.

You did really good works to recover from penguin. Over optimization is the main reason for the websites which were hit by the penguin. The best tips were given to me by an Expert IM was, "write contents for your readers, not for the search engines". .

I am not sure about it. But 301 redirecting and de optimizing the sites not gonna help you to recover from the Penguin bites.
After de indexing the site you should remove some of the crappy links and resolve your onpage. Then Wait for some days to see the result. I have read that people got benefit by doing this.
    thanks

The best way to beat penguin is basically diversify your backlinks and that you actually do the Onpage SEO of your webstie, with that you are guaranteed that you will get the right results
