People are going crazy with the "duplicate content" issue.

I have written an article on my site, waited for it to get indexed on google and than posted the same article to squidoo and articlebase.

Both sites rejected it because of dupe content.

This is stupid. I'm not CNN but lets say I were. Google would penalize thousands of sites who pick up their articles.

So right now, article dirs expect you to write 100% unqiue content for them to place their adds, link back to a great site (yours - they won't accept 2 post sites) for what? For a backlinck?

How about the time needed to write one? I could make a blog in the time needed to set everything on squidoo or hubpages.

The nerve of articlebase is even worse: they will nofollow anchor text backlinks.

And don't let me get started on the PR value, since it's almost non existent.

It's silly how all the seo articles out here, mass building links turned us into slaves of article dirs and keeping us from writing good content on our sites and earn money!

I forgot to say another downfall - it's not yours, they own everything

I am shifting my strategy and make web 2.0 properties like:
- blogger;
- posterous;
- wordpress;
- livejournal

BTW, this post was not a question, just wanted to share my thoughts!

    What in the hell makes you think that Squidoo or Articlebase owes you anything?

    It is their site. They can set whatever stipulations on content they want. If you do not like it, start your own site.

    To be honest, they are trying to keep spammers away, and requiring original content helps to do that.

      I agree, way better to start own site. This was the point of the thread.

    This really does demonstrate a mindset going around because it is becoming common for people to complain about various spam protection techniques

      Spamming protection should adress spammers
      I was not spamming, just cut, made some minor modification to my blog article and posted it on squidoo.
      Why you ask?
      For the link juices and exposure.
      And what I am saying is: this benefit is now so small that article dirs should behave.
      Spam protection, true - hire 1000 people and go by hand, but no p.. off everybody in the process.

      And almost forgot: is there a solid proof that offsite dupe content gets penalized?

    "Article directories" are a stupid idea. Who is going to browse through a directory of articles? Can we get serious here? These were made for search engines only.

    Stop using Squidoos, Articles Base, Ezine Articles, etc etc etc..

    Get your own blog and post your content over there! That is the way it works now.

    A site with nothing but scraped content from other websites is tougher to rank than a site where the majority of the content is original.

    Last year Google hammered article directories, many of which saw their traffic cut by over half. They are just reacting to try to reclaim some of that traffic.

    18 months ago, there were many searches you could do and find an article from Ezine, or GoArticles, etc. ranking in the top 10. Now that is very rare to find.

    Article directories are in business to make money, not to serve you. It is much cheaper to have an auto filter that eliminates articles taken from other places than it is to have extra moderators to review content.

    Not really sure what you are so upset about though. All you were getting was a PR 0 link anyhow. Not like you lost anything worthwhile.

    They don't care much about duplicate and unique content.

    Most algorithms they develope are for the sake of speeding up their own
    servers, datacenters, crawling and indexing time, and improving bandwith
    and the disk space usage they are having currently.

    I can see nothing much in that list about myths such as
    quality, spamming, unique and duplicate contents.

    Yes, they filter out results with duplicate titles and descriptions in
    search results and lower down the pages with that criteria in mind but
    that's far different than myths such as duplicate content. They can't
    judge who wrote the unique and who wrote the copy. If they can, they
    have created the most intelligent computer judge algorithm in the
    univerese that can take human position in real courts.

    I didn't need to try to know about it! Of course I'm lazy and so I have already much hard time posting content on my own sites, I will not post it on other people site, only exception is webmaster forums and perhaps some blog post I like then I post a comment if I have something to say.
    I also made small sites in a way similar to squidoo where people come and post, well that is their problem, but I'm not hypocritical I always suggest them they invest their time on their own web properties rather than waste it on mine or other people websites. That's for the long term because our time is limited and easily wasted :-)
