Making money on youtube with copyrighted material?!

Hi

I've seen numerous music videos on youtube now that contain copyright material yet the uploader is able to have adverts running on the start. For example this music video for Kings of Leon has 8 million + views! And he has ads running at the start
Kings of Leon- Knocked up - YouTube

So when I last checked a user makes about $1 usd per 1000 views. So that means for 8 million views this video he uploaded earns him $8000.

Can anyone else shed some light on how this is possible? Considering it is copyrighted material. I have numerous examples of other videos all of youtube is peppered with it.

When you set up videos to earn money from copyrighted material, you are breaking YouTube and adsense's TOS.

Not only that, but the owner of the copyrighted material can come after you for that $8,000 plus damages. YouTube (and adsense) will be happy to assist copyright owner with all the information about you from IP, email, name, (address if you have adsense) and etc.

The copyright owner will easily find you and will sue you for damages. It's no the matter of "if", it is the matter of "when" they zap you.

When uploading copyrighted material to YouTube - for example the Kings of Leon video - YouTube will automatically "know" that it is copyrighted material and you'll have to check a box saying that...yup, it's copyrighted, and I agree that ads can play during the video and that the money will go to the band/record label/whoever actually owns the original product.

So, just because they have ads playing, doesn't mean they're the ones getting the money. More than likely the money is going to the correct people.

Great post. I didn't know YouTube had that feature. That's great news!

I never post copyrighted material because it just doesn't feel right. Glad to hear that those folks with copyrighted material are doing the right thing.

So what is the point of enableing this copyrighted advertising feature in this first place? If the uploader doesn't get a slice surely they'd be like ah no point in this... Don't say that they have to do this because there is plenty of other videos by third parties uploaded that don't show the adverts. If the uploader is not getting a slice of the pie they are just annoying people by them having to watch the adverts and it makes no common sense or logic why they would enable them

Hmm, true, but this video would be more useful if this guy put ''call to action'' to some CPA offer. In this way anyone would be in profit
