Hi all,

I am new to all of this and just trying things out and need some help regarding to keyword research.

I have been spending some time finding a low completive key phrase/keyword which I have now found a good one to start with with okay ish traffic for a beginner.

So,

Say my keyword is TEST REVIEW

Now in Google I have searched "TEST REVIEW" with the quotations which gives the results of my exact competition. (50,000 results and the no 1 rank I have found that they have no back links which is great)

But if I remove the quotation marks from the search the results go up 100mil plus..... and the old number 1 is not even on page 1 without the quotations.

Is this something to worry about, even though I am using exact keywords and they aren't for my keyword, will I rank above them?

Does this sound like I could easily rank at number one using my keyword?

I hope this make sense.

Thanks

Ranking is based on your SEO activity and not really on keyword. Type "Make Money Online" without quotes and tell me how many websites on the first page having "Make Money Online" in their domains. Nothing. But because the ranked sites are SEOed properly, domains having the exact keywords are outranked.

for get quotes and all that rubbish

    make sure your own google.com

type the keyword in how most people would (just the word nothing else)

and then see what comes up in the top 10, this is your competition

you can also use traffic travis which is free to check the top 10 because you sometimes get personalized results on your own comp

the most important thing is not competition or traffic but make sure there are plenty of buyers in that niche and that people are spending money on advertisement ie google adwords

no ads = no money in the niche , so don`t even think about going for it

Install the free seo quake toolbar for firefox and check the PR of the sites in the top 10, the higher the average PR the tougher it is too rank in most cases. Real basic but works great 9 out of 10 times.

If you want to do it properly you need to sign up for SEOmoz so that you can look at the Page Authority of the top 10 sites, much more reliable.

The top ten site on google first page of that keyword is really what you need to worry about. They are your competitors. Dont worry too much about the search results, rather, go to traffic travis or market samurai, find out your competitor, their Backlinks, PR, exact keywords in title/desc/URL. Traffic Travis gives you an answer to whether or not you should go ahead with the keyword (easy - difficult rankings) If you don't have these tools, i use serpiq.com they have free keyword analysis for the first 6 keywords when you sign up. They are pretty acurate.

'Test Review' is a very competitive keyword without the quotes. If you want to rank for a keyword quickly try to target long tailed keywords such ' Microsoft test review'. HTH

How did you determine it was low competition? The reason I ask is that's where most beginners come unstuck.

Incorrect. Doing a search in quotes returns results for the phrase match.

Remember that real users rarely do a search in quotes.

You'll find that the case for most keywords.

As others have pointed out, what you really need to do is look at the onpage and offpage SEO of the top 10 results, as that is your real competition.

If you find that there are mostly high PR pages with lots of backlinks and with the keywords in the title/URL, then I would forget it.

      Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. Great help.

      UMS,

Well this where I don’t think I fully understand (keyword research)
So I thought of something which I could provide.
Once I found it, I used Google keyword tool to find keywords related to my niche.
I found a keyword phrase relating to the niche which has fairly decent number of searches per month and is low competetive (I know this doesnt matter for seo)
I then searched in Google with that exact keyword phrase and found there were over 100mil searches (not for the exact keyword) And I believe these are sites (in the top 10) which would be almost impossible to beat.
Now this is where I got stuck and asked you guys for help.
Am I going about my research is the right way?

Cable guy thanks for the PM, I would pm you back but I cannot due to not enough posts.....
