Google website description

I'm new to SEO and websites in general, and also Wordpress. As I was building my website with wordpress, I believe my site got indexed by google. When I search it now, I find my websites description is still the "default" wordpress description.
I have gone though and updated my homepage description, and all the meta descriptions on each page. I still see the old description when I search for my site however.
How long does it take for google to see the changes?
