I have just stepped into the realm of SEO and adense, and feel like I should get out while I still can. I have been trying to build my own websites uses the exact match domain approach, but have recently heard these have taken a really big hit by google.

Being so new to this, it feels really discouraging that my EMD approach may be old news. I have been spinning my articles, and submitting to multiple article websites. I have also been trying to develop new content for each site. I am aiming at having 5 to 7 relevant articles per site also.

Is it worth my time to continue with my EMD + backlinking approach or should I move on to another approach?

Thank you!

Granted this is just my opinion but that approach to IM is being killed off as far as organic traffic is concerned. I would take some time looking into investing effort into developing one larger website with more material then smaller niche style sites

Let's hope the OP does take this literally.

For years I've been saying an EMD is a lazy man's approach
to dreams. I told people not to swallow the koolaid.

But still, for years, on a forum called "warriorforum.com"
no less, the zombies kept coming. Oh, get an EMD! You'll
        be rich tomorrow!

It's not EMD's. It's the thinking and effort that goes behind
tons of those things. Check that. No thinking, no effort.

If you bought an EMD,( and I have some semi-ones) and
did not father it into authority, shame on you. But the
same could be said for ANY friggin' domain. And that's the
        point!

This has nothing to do with adsense, really. YOU are responsible
for getting your own targeted visitors, not google.

      That is not true..

I have a few clients that their EDM are still ranking as they were in the past.

What Google just did was to remove the priority their ALGO has for EDM...

So whether EDM or non EMD, they rank averagely the same now unlike in the past where if you have an EDM, you take the first spot.

I will still go for an EDM if you must know and still keeping my EDMs..

From what I gather, it sounds like only the boost of having an EMD which existed previously is no longer present so you can still use the approach but you won't get an additional ranking boost from it like previously.

I would quit that approach and try a new one. Keywords in the domain name has been overrated for awhile.

I think you're going to have to develop a bit thicker skin if you want to continue doing IM. If the EMD update has killed your strategy then you need to adjust your strategy.

Also, at least as far as I can tell, they're cracking down on sites that ONLY used EMD as their strategy. If your content is good then you probably/hopefully/should be fine. Look at it like this, if you have an EMD and you have good content then don't worry.

Micro niche websites? Forget about it. It's time to move onto bigger and better things. Create an authority website, don't build garbage links either. No less than 10,000 words of content but I suggest 25,000 plus!

You can still use an EMD, but don't bank on that for your rankings. Rank the site as though you didn't even have an EMD to begin with. That way if they are targeted again you have a strong enough footing to hopefully survive to algo change.

EMD seems to have no benefit anymore, better buy a domain with some random name in it and rank it for the same micro niche type of keyword as if you would've bought the EMD.

You might just need a few more strong links, that's all.

EMD have some benefit on other website who knows how to target their customers.EMD are good for established companies. if your company is not that established yet better think of another name for the domain name of your website.

Lets face it you play by Google's rules or you don't play at alll. Even then you never know what they will do to unlevel the playing field. It is obvious to me that they are targeting affiliate type websites. Where to go from here? I think the best approach is to consider ppc type marketing. That more or less bypasses Google's free traffic (though not entirely) and adopts a 'you have to speculate to accumulate' approach. This is where I am going I think and will be investing some time and effort to find out what sells with such an approach and what doesn't. The only way to beat Google is to take the free traffic they provide out of the equation and use them in the way they like - adwords! Free traffic is just nerve wracking

I have both EMD and non EMD site with adsense and affiliate ads in it.

My EMD site with Adsense and Affiliate Ads is affected .
My NON EMD site with Adsense and Affiliate is NOT affected.

I have just removed the affiliate ads in my EMD site. Not sure if it helps. Just have to wait for the next few days to see the result.

      Anybody wants to share?

Thanks for the posts. What does everyone classify as a "micro" niche website.

Each website that I had planned on creating would consist of ATLEAST five 400-500 word articles. Does that fall in the Micro category?

I never think about EMD. Because i believe that until i can provide fresh and quality content, my site would generate traffic.

Obviously the mark of google-safe website is quality content, and lots of it. But if we are posting quality content, how much content is ENOUGH?

    Ten 500 word articles? Twenty?

No amount is ever enough....as long as each article that is writen is quality and something that your visitors will find interesting and informative is whats most important.

No point bashing out ten 500 word articles that mean nothing.

If you can, continue going and SEE what happens. If you don't see any results in the future then you will have learnt something about seo first hand.

My one EMD is still ranking number one, and it doesn't really have anything that special. Just 20 articles relevant to the main keyword, with images, videos and backlinks out to authorities.

EMD will never die, the only thing that might die is crap sites that were riding the EMD boost. If you make a good website and the EMD isn't something completely overly and ridiculous, it should be fine. And once you rank number one, your CTR will potentially be above average as your EMD + Title in the serps will be exactly what the searcher is after.

Play by there rules or not you will get zapped unless you are a SEO jedi and REALLY know what your doing. With that in mind I outsourced my bank linking to some VERY well known SEO guys on here and guess what? Those sites got zapped too!

All-in-all I'm not too worried about this update even tho it zapped most of my adsense sites. Lets learn from the last update before this one. Where people where able to bring their sites back from the dead and to their top rankings. I will re-rank these sites again bigger and better than before.

The key is to be patient and build QUALITY. The great thing about this EMD shakeout is that it will drive out people who are merely looking to make a quick buck. It will force them to work harder to please their site VISITORS. That's the way it should be. Treat them like royalty and you WILL get rewarded... how quickly totally depends on you.

I have a few and have to say -you have to be patient and approach in a certian way:

    1. Build a lot of content- go wide -original content a good start
    2. Backlink to the content using long tail terms in the links - as long as possible
    3. Apply other methods to also build your business -build a list etc and look at paid advertising.

I have been around a long time, and relying on free traffic and easy fixes, was my biggest mistake- build a business, not a money maker....
