My speculations on the latest "EMD" update

Sorry for "another" thread, but I just felt that I need to open my mouth.

1) This "EMD" update is BS, since some of the crappy "EMD"s are actually moving up from the 900+ pages. They have 1 page content + privacy policy.. Some of the content is even spun =D

2) All my sites that got tanked run on "thesis" theme with very similar layout. They all had GA installed. The sites that are still up (only 2 lol) are running on different theme and without GA installed - THEY DIDN'T GET HIT.

3) All my sites had 20+ indexed pages, bounce rate ~60% and average time on site ~1min.

I personally think that this update wasn't aimed to EMD's at all. There is no point of waiting that your sites will "pop back".. Just start a new website and wait for another update to Google vanish all your sites from the SERPS.

If you really want to start again, then buy AGED domain with loads of backlinks on it... Put 30+ articles on the site, don't tweak your ON-PAGE SEO at ALL and only build HQ links. Forget about anchor text, instead use naked urls.. Don't connect your sites to GWT or GA, believe me, those folks on the Google claim that they don't use your GA data, but actually they are..

Furthermore, don't put all your eggs on one basket. Build audience through FB,TWITTER, use PPC etc. There are plenty of options...

Anyhow, if anyone ever figures out the "secret source" how to stay on 1st for years then share this info

Thanks

I agree with you. Avoid Google Analytics but i feel that EMD has over-reached and Google will restore some sites that have good content and good links. Links as you mention are ever more important. Anchor-rich text links are still important as one of my competitors have 10% of my links but is outranking in certain search terms as he has anchor text in links with those keywords.

Really depends on your site stats if you should avoid Analytics or not.. judging by the info he released I would avoid it too... He has a high bounce rate and low on site time which in theory could effect his SERP.

Ahh I see....you can find the bounce rate and time spent on website on GA cant you? What is classed as a high bounce rate?

If I recall correctly.. 40% area is considered "Decent to Good", 60% and over means you have issues

I have Google Analytics, and I have my site on Google Webmaster tools. I got nothing to hide. Heck, I even have Google Analytics installed on my iPhone.

    Didn't affect me at all.

Yep, same here. Then again my bounce rate hovers at 10% and my on site time is about 4 minutes.

10% NICE! Now I NEED to work on that. Do you have internal links within the content? Similar to how Wikipedia has their layout? I don't have that and I feel like I should implement that to decrease the bounce rate.

Yes I do, at the bottom of each article are related articles that enhance the current page's material. I also have some links inside articles where I have expanded the information even further as well.

My view is simple, if a user comes to 1 page and leaves then you only have one shot at a getting a click on an ad. If they come and visit 10 pages, then you have 10 shots at getting a click, pretty simple to see what increases your odds.

This took a ton of work because at one time my sites were sitting at a bounce rate of about 65% when I read how it can be used by Google and while reading I also realized my new strategy to take with it as well. Well worth it though, it was the difference for me and achieving goals.

Hmm is it safe to add inner links within the content? Perhaps nofollow? My pages are sitting in a good position I hope I don't eff it up by adding a hyperlink to some of the words.

Nice post and I agree. Google's free tools give them too much information about your website and make it vulnerable to updates.

      Or..

If your web site is put together correctly where your users come to your site and actually become engaged it works to your benefit.

It seems clear to me there was some focus on EMD, but people seem to incorrectly assume that it was a blanket focus on all EMD when that clearly isn't the case. Sites on really good EMDs ranking for those incredible terms (Cars.com, Hotels.com, CreditCards.com) are still #1 against bigger competition. Google was going after EMDs with thin sites, thin SEO and likely also EMDs that are narrow enough to not really support a full site to begin with (Size2PinkBallroomDress.com). Many people are going to mistakenly believe EMDs have no more power, and folks like us will happily grab more higher quality ones as a result - thank you!
