Can anyone tell me the best way to build back links to your site? I've been using "drop my link" and commenting on relevant sites that allow url links, and have probably made 15 - 20. On checking on backlinkchecker.com - it states I have no links. Can someone help me understand please?

    - Write quality content and post it on an external site.
    - Use business directories
    - Give the average man on the street something that he would want to share via social media

Also, backlinks can take time to be detected. You don't build a link today and have it show up immediately in all cases.

Getting posts onto other sites has been the best option for me. The links are in the content that way and work a lot better. The quality of the links you get is a huge factor for how well your site will rank in the future. Because of that, one solid link can help more than hundreds of weaker ones.

Like mgreener said, links take time to show up!

    • There are many other ways to build links in addition to blog commenting. Write high quality guest posts on popular websites and blogs, add original content on your site, and send out press releases. Use web 2.0 submission and build link wheels.

no backlink checker will pickup all of your links, and 15-20 probably isnt enough to make an impact, especially if they are comments. it also takes time to crawl and index your links, keep building and links will show

Try not to worry too much about whether or not these tools count your links. If you build them and you can see them, just know that they are there. The more you build, the more they will count and show results. Checking up on them too often will drive you crazy not to mention that it will in no way help your site either.

Depending on the level of competition you are going after, I would advise against building links manually. Good backlinking requires tremendous amounts of patience and persistence. And its going to be awhile before you see any results. Best save yourself from the disappointment of not seeing immediate results for such tireless, monotonous work and outsource it to someone else.
