Although search volume is recommended but low search volume is what one should not go for.Search volumes should be higher whatever the competition on that keyword is.

Depending on the niche, of course. In general its easier to go after low search volume keywords.

Market Samurai is a giant POS. You are smart to get away from that.

Two things I use. The most important one to me is SpyGlass. I use it to analyze a site's backlinks.

The other one that isn't too bad, but doesn't give you a ton of information is SEOmoz's keyword difficulty tool. It's not great, but far better than Market Samurai.

I'd say Market Samurai still has its uses, but SEO Spyglass blows everything I've seen out of the water when it comes to in-depth keyword and backlink analysis. Definitely worth the money.

You may use Google Adwords, which is free and provides accurate results. Look for keywords with high search volume and low competition.

Seriously? Almost everything is better than Market Samurai. Market Samurai gives you absolutely no useful information for determining the difficulty of a keyword. None.

The free version of SpyGlass gives you more actionable information than the paid version of MS. Half the SEO plugins for Firefox give you more useful information than MS.
