If a Primary Domain Gets Penalised Does It Affect the Addon Domains?

Does it? That's the only reason I can think of as to why one of my sites is still indexed but isn't ranking anymore. Majestic SEO says that I have 4 backlinks, which isn't an issue, as I was ranking on 1st and 2nd pages before the update. Therefore, I seriously doubt that it can be a backlinking issue. It's not like that I've been building spammy backlinks. All unique content as well.

I don't think so. My primary domain was affected by Penguin, but I have a site which is on page 1 and is an addon domain.

    Is the site an EMD?

No, it isn't an EMD, it's a branded domain. It also has around 65 posts. Google has been driving me crazy lately. I just wish I knew what I've being doing wrong.

There is no penalty here. Look up something called QDF. That is probably your answer. Your site is ranking exactly where it should be... now.

Do you really think that is the issue? What I don't understand is how websites which have simply used a plugin to pull content from Amazon are ranking highly, while my posts which actually talk about the product i.e. stating the strengths, weaknesses, who would benefit the most etc, are not ranking. I feel as if I'm providing much more value than others.

My rankings were lost on the day the update came out, so it seems like a bit of a coincidence.

You say "Your site is ranking exactly where it should be" but it isn't ranking at all. So I'm sure that it's more than just QDF.

No, not ranking at all is probably right where it should be then.

You said you have done no off-page SEO on it. Basically no backlinks. Unless this is a keyword with no competition, content alone is not going to rank you.

With the site only being 2 months old, QDF is a logical reason behind why it was ranking and now isn't. Without seeing the site, there is no way to be 100% sure, but I can say with almost 100% certainty it is not a penalty. For a site only 2 months old, you would have had to have been doing something horrifically wrong to attract Google's attention and be penalized.

I'm having the exact same problem lately on a website with about 30 articles on it. The old articles are ranking really well but those that were posted in the last week are on the 10th page or so.

It's frustrating to see that you're the first to write a review for a product and you're nowhere to be found on Google. I'm outranked by all types of weird sites with really long domain names (usually keyword stuffed domains with almost no unique content).

I recently noticed that both Bing and Yahoo started to send me traffic. Untill last month my search traffic was 99% sent by Google but now it's about 80%.

To be honest, I forgot all about this. I've ditched the site anyway and can't even remember which one I was talking about.

The update must have been the one near the start of October - I think it was the EMD update - but I don't think that was the issue.

Mike is probably right when he was talking about QDF... I'm sure this is why new websites which do well at the start slowly start to disappear.

My traffic actually increased after the EMD update. I also have an EMD but I didn't built any link targeting the keywords included in the domain and somehow my site wasn't affected. I still remember that day, when I performed a search and I couldn't recognize 50% of the competitors I had on the first page.

The funny thing is that once every 2 weeks (I'm not really sure about the timing) one of my competitors is back on the first page but only for 2-3 days. Then again... 2-3 weeks is nowhere to be found.

I'm not sure if I got this right but as far as I knew the QDF applies at a page level, not the entire domain. So once you publish a new review for example it might bet a nice boost in the first days and then will slowly sink.

Hmmm, interesting. Still not sure where I stand, as the KWs have minimal competition - PR n/a - 0 on first page of Google, with the majority having no backlinks to their name. The KWs are simply the product name followed by the word review. So my line of thinking is that I should be ranking at the very least in the top 100. The only backlinking I have done is having used Onlywire to submit the posts to social bookmarking sites. I know this isn't much, but I'm still thinking that it's enough, based on the competition.

PR on the first page tells you very little to nothing about the level of competition really.

    I don't think so.

My primary domain isn't even used (I've had it for like 5 years and it has pagerank of 0).

I have domains under it with much higher pagerank / seo / etc.

    Food for thought
