Help! Google Slapped ?!?!?!

This stinks!

My site, after a year of work, was finally ranking on page 1 for a number of my main keywords and traffic had just hit 10K per month and growing. My main product which has been in development for a year is set to launch later this month.

Today, I noticed that around 5pm my total traffic for the day was like 50 visits. I did some quick checks and instead of page 1 for my main keyword I am now page 10.

I have no idea why. I have not done anything new from an SEO standpoint or link building and things have been going well. What is worse - I have absolutely no idea where to even start trying to figure out why this has happened or determining what if anything I can do about it!

I have been doing article syndication link building using Article Samurai since January. Slow and steady, no duplicate content. I have over 150 unique articles on the site averaging over 900 words each.

Could it be related to recent traffic growth and the server needing upgrade? Am I just screwed and Google has decided that my site is BAD whatever that means?

To lose all my traffic right before I am set to launch... CRUSHING. A years work down the tubes not to mention all the $$$$ invested.

ANY suggestions or help are greatly appreciated.

You probably got hit by one of the latest google updates - EMD update and another pinquin or panda upadate that came in the same time.

Yesterday and today? Yesterday, traffic was like 260 unique, which is a bit lower than normal lately. Today its dead. So that would seem to indicate it dropped out of the rankings late yesterday?

Really doesnt make any sense and I have no idea where to even start trying to determine what I can do.

Sounds like you were Penguin-slapped. That update is focused on backlinks. Check your backlink profile.

How can one go about checking the backlink profile and what do you look for as "bad" ?

Check Ahrefs.com. That will give some idea. Pay attention to the ratios like dofollows/nofollows and how many have the same anchor text.

That could be your problem. Too many unnatural backlinks and are you spinning the articles? If your site is registered on Google Webmaster tools and if it's the backlinks causing the problem you may have a message about it.

Or it could just be what's called the Google dance and your site might end up higher than before.

I notice many good quality sites in various niches that were ranked onto first page now they were totally vanished from first page to page 50-70 I don't know why but one of site has no exact match domain it has PR 4 and over 50 page of content each page about 1K word content and good social signals I notice it has over 70K Facebook like and 12K Google +1 domain was registered jun 2001, and regardless of all this and social signals site drop the ranking I find site all the way to page 82 so looks like that even having strong social signals and a lot of content it won't help much for these never ending algorithm updates, I think Google will keep doing these updates every month to make it harder and harder for you to rank site higher and earn nice affiliate commission's, looks like they only care for big brands they can care less for good quality affiliate sites....

All the content on my site - 150+ articles, are 100% unique, range from 500 to 4000 words (average is around 950) and were written by a professional medical research writer. Nothing spun... nothing shared anywhere else, all literally the best content on the topics on the web. The domain dates to 2002.

If this holds.... google wins. Folks have been saying that SEO is dead and I think they are correct. Google has 1 purpose in mind with all the algo updates: force people to buy adwords. So, rather then fight the powers that basically own the internet, I will do as they instruct. No more SEO effort - buy traffic through adwords and pray the ROI works.

I think the future of SEO is in negative SEO. Destroying competition by crushing their rankings through massive crap backlinking to your competitors sites.

Sorry to hear about that Terry,

But destroying competition to increase you rank will only end up back firing on you mate.

If all your content and links are via articles you should be good.

It might be just as PatricaJ say you could just be doing the Google dance.

If Yahoo and Bing sorted there act out then google would not be able to do this, as google controls the internet they will do what they like.
there seems to be a lot of webmasters out there my self included who are convinced that their SEO has been white hat and i would have no reason to think otherwise,so when you get slap off Google you wonder why.

WHAT?!?!?!? Google DOES NOT control the internet...they manage an index...they are just a website...they are an aggregator...that's just one step up from an autoblog.

We own the content...NEVER FORGET THAT.

To everyone who reads this...DO NOT RELY ON GOOGLE RANKINGS...diversify your traffic sources...build lists...explore social media...write articles regularly.

Use SEO for lead generation and capture only.

I couldn't agree with you more. You hit the nail on the head. I had a site that was hit by Google over 1 year ago, and I refused to scrap the site. I used other sites to gain traffic and sales. If other webmasters would "stick it to Google".....Big G would have no choice but to dwindle into oblivion. I foresee these updates as Big G's downfall. There will be significant backlash.

  • I would hazard a guess that you've been penalized for unnatural anchor text ratios in your backlinks. Vary up your anchor text more and make sure the majority of your anchor texts are your site/brand name. That is what a natural link profile looks like.

Hi terry, not sure I'm sorry to hear that or not. You have been using a automated tool to submit articles? Not sure what you expect. Low quality sites with your links.....

This has to be the problem.

Not so sure about that. Their network is very good - the article sites are not spammy crap. Also - at the previous Panda and penguin updates my rankings went UP. The updates last week killed me.

My page URL's use hyphens. Makes them easier to read to me. I wonder if that contributed.

Regardless.... the big question is what to do next. I am overwhelmed with tons of work that I have to get completed in order to finish the web application product so it can launch later this month, but I also need to get some traffic back. So I am going to do another posting about possibly hiring some professional help.
