changing domain name advice

greetings,

I have purchased a new domain for my business and want it to become my primary domain that I put on business card etc.

Whats the best thing to do?

Copy the website files to the new domains hosting then put a permenant redirect on the old domain?

Or something different?

    Use permanent redirect ie 301 redirect. Create same file structure that the old website has and copy all the content in new files
    OR
    Just use permanent redirect on root domain. Block the pages from old site and use the content on those pages for new website. Create a file structure of your choice.

    Don't forget to add removal request in Google tool to remove pages from Google index

    Can anyone say with any certainty that link juice to the old domain will pass through a 301 redirect to the new domain?

    If you've purchased a domain registration, its refund eligibility will depend on the type of domain TLD you've registered. Give support a call and they can check the domain and the account and let you know if a refund is possible. You can certainly register a new domain name at anytime, but you'll want to find out if your original is eligible for refund prior to cancelling.

      Thanks for the reply but i'm not after a refund. I have a .co.uk domain and have for some years with my business. The oppotunity has arisen to buy the .com version with is an exact match to my business name, where as my current .co.uk isn't an exact match as the domain had already gone.

      I will keep my current .co.uk for a few years at least as many clients know this but long term I want to transfer the business to the .com exact match domain to make it easier for my clients when delaing with email addresses etc.

      I think the 301 redirect on the root domain for the .co.uk is the way forward. It makes sense. Then copy all the .co.uk files to the .com site so the site remains the same. Then tell Google.
