Image Over Text OK for SEO?

I'm pretty good at ranking WP blogs using the normal things, Title, Permalinks, H1 tags.

I've got one ranked for the words I want using H1 tags in the body, as the headline for the sales page. But, it looks like crap. I like to do graphical headlines in Photoshop.

So I had this brainstorm I'm testing. I'd love to hear if anyone else has tried this.

  1. I kept my H1 headlines on the page, just wrapped them a little tighter to fit in about 1/2 the page.
  2. I created graphical headlines in Photoshop.
  3. I uploaded the pic and using divs, absolutely positioned it OVER the H1 headline, effectively hiding it.
I don't think this is a keyword stuffing sin like using text the same color as the background. But I'm curious if Google is even smart enough to figure it out. Either way, my H1's say the same damn thing.

What do you guys think?

Technically yes, but as I said, I'm not hiding stuffed keywords. I'm hiding the same keywords the image is showing.

True, your not keyword stuffing. But you are hiding keywords/content, which is a nono.

It all depends on the image, if the image makes the site look better and it should add alt text to it and you'll have the same result

Hiding text, no matter the scenario, is hiding text.

Also note, the alt tag used in the image is considered the anchor text, remember that.

Don't try to trick the search engines, it's not worth it.

If you're concerned about the way your pages "look", just apply a style to your header tags using css.

There should be no need for such tom foolery.

I think it will be okay. It does not really fall into hidden text as you have alt text in image and have a valid H1 tag. Go for it.
