Ranking external URL's

hey guys,
I have my main site: www.mainsite.com
and I have my blog: www.mainsite.com/blog
I use the blog to drive traffic to the main site through article marketing etc
I want to target people searching for a certain keyword: [keyword]
Would it make sense to buy a domain name that matches exactly with the keyword: keyword[dot]com
- And have it re-direct to my blog?
If I did a redirect, would the keyword site even rank at all? Or will google recognise the keyword site as having the content of the blog section?
Or can I have it so my blog has two URL's.
Would it be better to just have it as: www.mainsite.com/blog/keyword ?
