Ways that I've tried Link Building!

Over the past few years, being an SEO has been getting more difficult every day. Google's algorithm updates have made it difficult to reap results from building backlinks; even quality links.

Here are a list of ways that I've tried building backlinks and my results:

  • Blog Commenting- Little or no improvement in SERPS
  • Microsites- New microsites with little authority showed very little improvement.
  • text link ads- I'm not sure if it did anything.
  • Pay Per Post- That was a waste of money!
  • SENuke- That site will never be found again!
  • Guest Posting- I have found that this works somewhat. I haven't done enough of it to truly diagnose.
  • Article submissions- Be careful where you submit.
  • Directory Submissions- Be careful where you submit. Still very little improvement.
  • PRweb- This worked really well for one of my clients that was already ranking pretty well. I tried this on another site and basically saw no results. (I'm very interested to know other people's experience with PRweb has been.)
When it comes down to it, there doesn't seem to be any "easy" way to build links. Creating good content is difficult for every industry. For example, how to you make content about "carpet cleaning" go viral?

I want to hear what has worked and not worked from other people. Share your ideas please!

Hi, I think microsites are over in the light of latest algorithm changes.
The most two techniques I use are forum posting and directory submission. Of course, you have to be carefull. Do not use automatic submission services which submit to dozens of junk general directories (many of them developed on dropped domains).
You should consider submitting to quality niche directories, relevant to the topic of your site. That's valuable links but, ususally such directories know their value and ask for paid inclusion.
In the end we see that companies with fat budgets got better and quality links, compared to "lonely" webmasters without budgets.

What about the content to which you are back linking ? What is the quality.

Days of pure backlinks are over now. With the recent google updates panda/penguin/EMD the focus is to weed out low quality sites. It does not matter how many backlinks you have.

Your long term strategy should be towards providing valuable content to the user. If you are targeting anything other than this, there is always a google update a around the corner.

Yes, many articles that I have read support what you have just stated. Quality links over quantity of links. I agree, however, how does Google decide what is quality now? Is PageRank not as important as it used to be anymore? Are there other variables that Google is weighing more such as actual traffic, brand recognition, and so on?

I think the answer for this is to hire a top notch writer that have the creative mind to make that kind of articles. Anyway, those mention above are traditional SEO methods and some of them are still working nowadays especially guest blogging.
