Ranking Better for Search Terms

On Page SEO
To rank better for search terms related to your website text on your page should be related to what you want to rank for but you shouldn't overuse words, this is called keyword stuffing and search engines will penalize you for it.
Example:
A has 3/200 of the same words on his page related to his website (ex: games).
B has 5/200 of the same words on his page related to his website.
C has 200/200 of the same words on his page related to his website.
A will rank okay for his keyword (not taking into account off page SEO and competition).
B will rank well for his keyword.
C will be penalized and probably won't rank at all for his keyword.
Another thing you should do is make sure that text in your title contains keywords related to your site for two reasons: this will also help you rank for those keywords and people are more likely to click on results with titles related to what they're searching for since search engines use text from your title tag for the title of your search result.
Tip
I'm sure you've heard of the keywords meta-tag. Google currently doesn't value (or so we're told) keywords in the keywords meta-tag. That doesn't mean you shouldn't put some keywords in there as other search engines may use it and it could only help your SEO. I advice no more than 10 keywords and don't spend so much time thinking of them.
Off Page SEO
Google decides what you rank for based on where your links are coming from (ex: a games website) and what you anchor text is. So whenever you have the chance, instead of making your anchor text your website make it a search term you want to show up for. A good place to get links from with custom anchor text is social websites like Google Plus, forums, blogs and web directories. Web directories are like search engines except you have to submit you site to them. A good way to get links from relevant websites is to post on forums and blogs which are related to your website. Use different anchor text to rank for as many search terms as possible and so that Google doesn't think you're spamming links.
