Add text to image intensive website

I have a client who wants better rankings but the problem is that their home & category pages are designed in such a way that adding any text to them would make the page look odd.

Rather than requesting my client to redesign their site is there another way that I can add the necessary text to achieve better rankings?

    Image alt tags, I use them on my photoshop texture site. I was shocked to see how few people actually do this and it did wonders for me.

      Do you use img title as well?

      How descriptive are your alt tags e.g. are they several words long? Are they keyword stuffed?
